The future might hold surprises, but it’s undeniably ending with a boom! Notably, characters from the original series are making a comeback: we saw Susan first, followed by Jack, and just now, Omega has reappeared in today’s episode.

In “Wish World”, a character from season 14 that fans weren’t anticipating a return made an appearance. Although it was just a short appearance, there were some intriguing elements to it. The character in question is none other than Rogue, played by Jonathan Groff, who has become a significant figure for the Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa.

In “Wish World,” the Doctor appeared to be an ordinary individual leading an ordinary life, married to Belinda (Varada Sethu), and sharing a daughter with her. However, there was something disturbingly amiss – this became apparent when colossal skeletal beings started wandering around London. The Rani (Archie Panjabi) had orchestrated it all as part of a sinister scheme to shatter the very essence of reality by harnessing the power of an infant deity, the God of Wishes.

Amidst all the chaos, the Doctor got an unusual communication. It was Rogue reaching out from the infernal realm where he had been trapped during their last encounter. “I’m running short on time – they’re approaching and this place is collapsing… I’m not sure if I’ll make it,” Rogue warned, without specifying who the “they” were. “I can only give you one heads-up, and it might seem odd, but pay attention… things shouldn’t behave in that manner.”

The audience is now pondering, what does the Rogue’s appearance signify for the series in the future? Could this significant love interest of the Doctor make another appearance beyond just a cameo in the next episode?

Jonathan Groff Is Happy To Return

In the episode of “Doctor Who: Unleashed” that followed “Rogue”, Jonathan Groff expressed his desire for Rogue to break free from his hell dimension. He stated, “I hope we’ll see Rogue again,” indicating that the fate of Rogue is now in the hands of the Doctor. In essence, the Doctor has been given the opportunity to either find or not find Rogue, so the situation is entirely up to him.

Kate Herron, one of the writers for “Rogue” together with Briony Redman, expressed her hope that Rogue will return. She said, “We wrote in the script, ‘Find me,’ and the Doctor has [Rogue’s] ring. We weren’t sure if they would remove it, but Russell Davies, the showrunner, allowed us to keep it in. So, yes, we are hopeful. If Russell decides to bring Rogue back, it would be a great compliment for us.

Doctor Who is streaming on Disney+.
