In the supposed final installment of Tom Cruise’s popular action series, titled “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning“, they aim to wrap up all unresolved storylines from previous films. This involves resolving enigmas like the real identity behind the Rabbit’s Foot in “Mission: Impossible 3“, and providing a fitting send-off for beloved characters such as Luther (played by Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg). Moreover, this movie takes a closer look at Ethan Hunt’s past actions and character traits, demonstrating how they have contributed to the emergence of The Entity, a lethal AI intent on human extinction. Interestingly, in its introspective journey through the past, “The Final Reckoning” reintroduces Rolf Saxon as William Donloe, a character last seen in the 1996 film “Mission: Impossible“.
Warning: Spoilers below for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
In the original “Mission: Impossible” movie, I found myself in Prague alongside Ethan Hunt and his IMF comrades, tasked with halting a renegade agent from nabbing a Non-Official Cover (NOC) list – a secretive roll call of all Eastern European IMF agents. But the operation turned sour when we were ambushed, leaving my teammates seemingly deceased and the NOC list stolen. To make matters worse, I was falsely accused of being the mole behind our mission’s downfall and the demise of my friends. To redeem myself and unmask the actual traitor, I joined forces with Claire Phelps, a fellow outcast agent, Luther Stickell, and Franz Krieger. Together, we concocted an audacious burglary to snatch the genuine NOC list from the Langley CIA headquarters. The climax of our daring plan unfolded in the legendary vault scene where I, hanging by wires, navigated a highly sensitive, pressure-triggered and temperature-controlled room to retrieve the list from a terminal, all while dodging detection.
In the movie “Mission: Impossible,” William Donloe is portrayed as a CIA analyst stationed at Langley headquarters. He’s in charge of a secure vault, from which Ethan Hunt steals the NOC list. Donloe is presented as a meticulous employee, but he falls ill after consuming a coffee laced with laxatives provided by Krieger, forcing him to leave his post. This unexpected absence creates an opportunity for Ethan’s team to gain access to the vault. After the security breach is discovered, Donloe is subjected to interrogation by IMF Director Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny). Towards the end of the film, a disheartened Donloe is shown bundled up in a parka, sorting papers at a remote, frozen outpost. This seems to be a harsh punishment for the lapse in security that occurred under his watch. Nearly three decades later, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” provides an account of Donloe’s fate following the events of the original movie.
The Final Reckoning Reveals What Happened to William Donloe After Mission: Impossible
In the film Mission: Impossible – Fallout, it’s uncovered that Donloe was previously a renowned computer genius who created the CIA’s supposedly uncrackable vault, considered the most secure data protection system in the realm of espionage. However, following Ethan and his crew’s infiltration of the vault during the initial movie, Donloe suffered a demotion and was relocated. Later, Donloe is assigned by the CIA to an old listening post located in the Arctic Ocean’s icy waters, specifically on St. Matthew Island in the Bering Sea. This isolated station, shrouded in eternal winter, serves to monitor and record any suspicious activities in the area. Despite its harsh conditions, Donloe finds solace in this desolate landscape.
Over time, taking up a new role finds Donloe crossing paths with and marrying Tapeesa (Lucy Tulugarjuk), an Inuit woman. This union marks the beginning of a fresh chapter in his life. By the point when Ethan’s group reaches St. Matthew’s facility, Donloe has let go of any resentment he previously held. He’s now nothing but thankful, as Ethan’s vault heist served to open Donloe’s eyes to the flaws in his previous existence and offered him the chance to find a loving home in St. Matthew. In fact, Donloe and Tapeesa join forces with Ethan’s team during “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”, assisting them in locating the Sebastol submarine and eventually disarming a bomb that Gabriel (Esai Morales) used to pressure Ethan into providing him tools to control the Entity. As a result, “The Final Reckoning” concludes Donloe’s journey, as he lends aid to the same individuals who once jeopardized his career.
