Warning! This article contains spoilers for Your Friends and Neighbors.
Despite Your Friends and Neighbors not revealing Paul’s killer as of yet, certain characters within the Apple TV+ series appear more suspicious than others. In the initial scenes of Your Friends and Neighbors, Jon Hamm’s character, Andrew Cooper, is found next to a corpse in a house. Fearing legal repercussions due to his DNA being at a crime scene, he becomes frantic, leaps into the pool, and then reflects on the series of events that led him to this moment.
In this Apple TV+ series, viewers journey with the protagonist Andrew Cooper as he experiences a series of life-altering events: getting divorced and losing his job, leading him to begin stealing valuable items from his wealthy neighbors. However, it becomes clear throughout the show that despite Andrew appearing at the scene of Paul’s murder, he is not the culprit. In fact, in the second half, Andrew himself gets arrested for the crime but remains baffled as to the real killer’s identity and motives. This leaves many unanswered questions about the true nature of the murderer.
5. Nick
Nick Might Have Done It Set Up Cooper
It’s possible that Nick appears too relaxed to carry out the crime, but he could have a compelling motive for doing it. The series has suggested that Nick has been trying to deepen his relationship with Mel, but she consistently seems reluctant about taking their relationship further due to her lingering feelings for Cooper. To remove Cooper from the picture, it’s plausible that Nick might have killed Paul and attempted to frame Cooper for the crime, as he saw the confrontation between Cooper and Paul as the ideal moment to kill him and shift the blame onto Cooper.
In the course of our TV adventure, it occurred to me that Cooper and Nick had swapped vehicles at some point. It struck me later that the boot of Cooper’s car seemed to open mysteriously on its own. I suspect this could have been an opportunity for Nick to surreptitiously place a gun in the trunk, with the intent of framing Cooper for Paul’s murder.
4. Hunter
Hunter Was Not A Suspect Until A Recent Story Development
In the early episodes of the show, Hunter, Cooper’s son, wasn’t among those suspected. Yet, in one scene, Hunter appears quite shifty. After a tiring day, when Cooper comes home, Hunter claims to know beyond doubt that he didn’t kill Paul. He even mentions he visited specifically to tell Cooper this. Although Cooper feels relieved by his son’s declaration, there seems to be something Hunter is concealing, possibly suggesting that he might have been involved in Paul’s death.
The issue with Hunter being the killer in this story is that it might make “Your Friends and Neighbors” too much like “Presumed Innocent.” The shocking ending of “Presumed Innocent” discloses that the main character’s daughter was actually the murderer. Given that “Presumed Innocent” is also an Apple TV+ production, it would be quite unexpected if another show on the platform repeated the same twist. Another theory could be that Hunter saw who killed Paul, which explains why he believes his father isn’t the murderer.
3. Bruce
Bruce Was At Coop’s Place Before He Was Caught
It’s odd that Allison’s ex-partner, Bruce, was at Cooper’s place just before the cops discovered a gun in Cooper’s car. Strangely enough, moments after Bruce left Cooper’s residence, the gun mysteriously appeared in Cooper’s vehicle, along with Bruce’s DNA on it. This raises suspicions that Bruce might have murdered Paul and is attempting to shift blame towards Cooper.
An alternative theory could be that Bruce was either a questionable financier for Paul or was employed by the investors to eliminate Paul inconspicuously. Alternatively, it’s possible that Bruce had personal motives to murder Paul and framed Cooper as a fall guy.
2. Elena
Elena Already Had A Gun
On the night of the murder, Elena and Cooper were together until they had a disagreement and chose to separate. Before Cooper opted to burglarize Sam’s home, it was Elena who departed first. This sequence of events implies that prior to Cooper visiting Sam’s house, Elena might have gone there with the intention of stealing something valuable. However, unexpectedly, she found Paul inside the house. In the tense situation that ensued, she ended up firing a shot, striking Paul, and then hastily departing the crime scene.
In a previous episode, it was revealed that I, Elena, owned a firearm. Now, in ‘Your Friends and Neighbors’ episode 8, it’s clear that I broke into Cooper’s house when he was arrested and made off with all the ill-gotten riches he had amassed from his criminal activities. It’s plausible that I might have pulled a similar stunt before, to leave the gun in his car as evidence. Strangely enough, I started contacting Cooper shortly after news outlets began reporting Paul’s murder.
1. Sam
Sam Seems Even More Suspicious After Episode 8
In the show “Your Friends and Neighbors,” Olivia Munn’s character Sam stands out as a prime suspect due to a compelling motive for wanting Paul out of her life permanently. Throughout the series, it’s shown that Sam harbored intense resentment towards Paul following their divorce, feeling bitter about his quick remarriage. Despite having an apparently rock-solid alibi, there’s speculation she may have hired someone to take care of her ex-husband instead. Earlier in the series, she mentioned knowing what Paul was up to at their home when she wasn’t around.
Your Friends & Neighbors Cast & Characters | |
Actor | Role |
Jon Hamm | Andrew Cooper |
Amanda Peet | Mel Cooper |
Olivia Munn | Sam Levitt |
Hoon Lee | Barney Choi |
Mark Tallman | Nick Brandes |
Lena Hall | Allison “Ali” Cooper |
Isabel Gravitt | Tori Cooper |
Randy Danson | Lu |
Donovan Colan | Hunter Cooper |
In episode 8 of “Your Friends and Neighbors,” Sam unexpectedly starts accusing Andrew of the crime without any substantial evidence. This raises suspicion that she could be shielding herself or another person. Perhaps, she is the one who perpetrated the crime and framed Cooper after he turned down her efforts to deepen their relationship. Alternatively, she might have paid someone to kill Paul to avoid being implicated in the crime.
