Initially when Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 were unveiled earlier this year, one notable skater was absent from the iconic roster: Bam Margera. Back then, Margera was a well-known figure, largely due to his stunts in videos such as CKY2K and the hit MTV show Jackass. His omission felt strange, especially after the remake’s announcement, and it didn’t take long for the community to voice their concerns. More recently, Activision and Iron Galaxy confirmed that Margera would indeed be part of the game, hidden as a secret skater. However, it appears that this wasn’t always the plan.
In a recent episode of the skateboarding podcast The Nine Club, Chris Roberts, Jeron Wilson, and Kelly Hart interviewed Bam Margera about potentially being included in the THPS 3+4 roster. Earlier this year, the show’s producer Roger Bagley stated that Tony Hawk had advocated for Margera to join the game’s cast even though the work on the game had already been completed. According to Margera’s account, it appears that Tony Hawk indeed supported his inclusion.
Eventually, I found myself with a free day in California, and my destination was Carlsbad, where I store my Range Rover. As I looked at my wife, I thought, “Maybe I should give Tony Hawk a call to see what he’s up to?” Without hesitation, I decided to go for it. Turned out, he was skating the vert ramp. So, there we were – Alphonso Rawls, Bucky Lasek and myself – surprising him by ollieing over the channel together for a doubles photo. His reaction? “What? Bam is back!
In other words, Margera mentioned that he had learned from rumors that the video game had a deadline which had already passed, but he thought he was correct in assuming that his friend said something along the lines of: “Listen, we’re planning to include Bam in the game.” To which they responded: “But the deadline has already occurred.” His friend then reportedly replied: “I don’t mind. You’re setting a new deadline. Make it happen no matter what.” It seems to me that if Margera hadn’t reached out to him on that particular day, none of this would have transpired.
Additionally, Margera discussed his experiences with Activision, such as having his body scanned and selecting the outfit for his character in the game. He also mentioned THPS Fest, where not only him but professional skater Andy Anderson from Powell-Peralta were unveiled as hidden characters in THPS 3+4.
One intriguing detail from this chat revolves around the discussion about the fresh skaters included in THPS 3+4. During their banter, the hosts and Margera mentioned several skaters who have already been announced such as Margielyn Didal, Jamie Foy, and Chloe Covell. Interestingly, Margera claimed that Greyson Fletcher is part of the game, a fact that hasn’t been publicly confirmed yet.
As a gaming enthusiast, bringing Fletcher into the mix doesn’t seem far-fetched at all. He recently made his pro debut with Birdhouse, which is Hawk’s skateboarding company, creating a link there. It’s uncertain if Margera hinted that Fletcher is in the game or attending the event, but we’ll have to stay tuned to find out if Activision and Iron Galaxy decide to include him!
The game THPS 3+4 will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, a future version of the Nintendo Switch, and PC starting July 11th.
