In The Last of Us, there are numerous harrowing scenes. Just in Season 1, Tess meets a grisly end to shield Joel and Ellie, Henry takes his own life following Sam’s transformation, and Joel massacres an entire hospital filled with Fireflies to protect Ellie from their attempt to exploit her for a cure. Initially, it seems that Season 2 offers a fresh start as Joel and Ellie find tranquility in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. However, the series becomes even more difficult to endure by Episode 2, as Abby brutally slays Joel with a golf club, leaving Ellie devastated.
In Ellie’s storyline in The Last of Us Part II, witnessing her mentor’s demise triggers an inner resolve within her, leading her on a path of vengeance in Seattle, Washington. On multiple instances, she delves into her sinister nature, like when she coerces Nora for details while they’re both in the hospital. However, there’s a scene that eclipses this dark act in intensity, making the event in The Last of Us Part II feel more akin to a visit at an amusement park rather than a harrowing experience.
Ellie Chooses the Path of Most Resistance in The Last of Us Season 2
Ellie spends several episodes tracking down one of Abby’s team members. Upon learning that Nora works in a hospital, she moves there once Jesse arrives and secures Dina’s safety. After a swift chase, they find themselves in a level filled with spores that quickly impact Nora. As Nora gasps for breath, Ellie resorts to striking her with a pipe in an attempt to force her to disclose Abby’s whereabouts. However, she manages to squeeze out only a few words before returning to Jesse and Dina, now prepared to reunite with Tommy and return home.
When she sets out with Jesse, they ascend to the rooftop of a structure for a clearer city perspective. In quick succession, it becomes apparent where Tommy is as he’s engaged in a gun battle with associates of the Washington Liberation Front. However, Ellie swiftly shifts her focus elsewhere. Catching sight of a Ferris wheel and aquarium that appear to be within the region Nora specified, she has a disagreement with Jesse before proceeding towards her intended spot. Venturing into the aquarium, she surveys the surroundings, and eventually picks up a conversation between two individuals.
Upon bursting into the room, Ellie discovers herself standing opposite Owen and Mel, associates of Abby’s group. She expresses that she doesn’t intend to harm them and merely seeks to locate Abby, but Owen remains skeptical. In a swift move, Owen grabs for his weapon, compelling Ellie to fire, fatally wounding him. The weapon Ellie wields packs quite a punch, with the bullet passing through Owen and striking Mel, who then collapses to the floor, revealing her pregnant state to Ellie. This series of events shares some resemblance to the The Last of Us Part II video game, but the show carves its unique path by having Mel present Ellie with an insurmountable task.
The Last of Us Season 2’s Ellie Fails Worse Than Her Video Game Counterpart
Among the ex-Fireflies, Mel stands out with her exceptional kindness. During the assault on Joel, she exhibits empathy, comforting Dina by explaining that the sedative they administer won’t be fatal. Throughout the series, Mel maintains this compassionate demeanor, even attempting to dissuade Owen from participating in the WLF’s attack on the Seraphite island. She also extends a peaceful gesture towards Ellie, trusting that she won’t harm them. However, Owen’s temperament prevents him from making rational decisions, which eventually leads Mel to ask her murderer to spare her child as she takes her final breaths.
In “The Last of Us Part II”, Ellie pursues Mel after she shoots Owen, leading to a struggle where Mel is stabbed by Ellie in the neck. Mel succumbs to her wounds rapidly, allowing Ellie to reveal that Mel was pregnant without worrying about another attack. Contrary to expectations, Mel wasn’t trying to harm anyone and, once she understood her time was running out, she attempted to guide Ellie through delivering the baby. Initially, Ellie tries to comprehend Mel’s instructions, but as the Wolf’s speech becomes slurred, it proves too challenging. Overwhelmed, Ellie only pulls Mel’s shirt back down and weeps until Tommy and Jesse arrive at the aquarium. In the game, Ellie displays similar emotions, but she doesn’t have to grapple with the knowledge that she can’t provide Mel’s baby a fighting chance.
The Last of Us Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
