PS5 Pro’s PSSR Was So Good, F1 25 Used Double Resolution Ray-Traced Reflections

Codemasters has expressed admiration for Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology (PSSR). In a conversation with us, producer Si Lumb stated that PSSR is an efficient upscaler which enables the studio to intensify graphical quality further in the PS5 Pro version of the forthcoming F1 25. He added, “We were pleased to discover that the PlayStation 5 Pro was equipped with such a finely-tuned upscaler in PSSR.

Lumb elaborated on how AI-enhanced upscaling, similar to what’s found in technologies like Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), generally operates. He highlighted that the proposed PS5 Pro model stands out by converting lower-resolution inputs into high-definition outputs. Additionally, Lumb disclosed that due to PSSR, the studio managed to double the resolution of ray-traced reflections, allowing for improved image quality and consistent frame rates without compromising on either aspect.

In the realm of graphics technology, upscalers have enabled rendering engines to boost detail in a lower resolution source image. These enhanced images can then be transformed with AI models into stunning high-resolution frames. Afterward, post effects and adjustments can be applied. Lumb clarified this process for the PS5 Pro, stating that initially, they had not planned to incorporate PSSR in F1 24 due to their risk management strategy.

In a surprising turn of events, during testing, it proved incredibly proficient at converting low-resolution inputs into high-resolution outputs. So proficient, in fact, that we could input double resolution Ray Traced reflections and trust the AI to generate a significantly higher quality image. This is something our traditional TAA upscaler couldn’t achieve.

The producer additionally discussed the advanced technology employed to boost realism in F1 25, such as implementing LiDAR scanning for a more precise representation of the game’s multiple racing circuits, vegetation, and spectators. In their upcoming project, the studio intends to fully leverage PSSR to achieve even greater visual accuracy on the PlayStation 5 Pro.

In the upcoming F1 25, we’re carrying over the same solution as last year, F1 24. This means we retain the same high-quality performance, but with significantly more LIDAR tracks for enhanced density and improvement that the Quality mode offers. Looking ahead, although we don’t have any immediate announcements, we’re excited to delve into other aspects of our game where technology like PSSR can help us push boundaries and improve visual quality on console hardware.

As a fervent fan, I can’t contain my excitement after learning juicy tidbits about F1 25 straight from Lumb and creative director Gavin Cooper in an interview! They spilled the beans on several aspects of the upcoming game, including enhancements to My Team features, advancements in the Braking Point story mode, and improvements to the handling and physics system. Simply put, it sounds like F1 25 is going to be a game-changer!

On May 30, “F1 25” will be available for play on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. This release marks the continuation of the Braking Point storyline. To ensure stunning visuals on PC, the game utilizes path tracing technology. For comprehensive information about the game, check out these details.
