I can’t wait to see how Square Enix will reimagine the original Dragon Quest and its sequel for the modern era

Since I’ve been a dedicated fan of Dragon Quest since I completed the main series in the 2010s, I am eagerly anticipating the release of this upcoming Xbox JRPG. Last year, when I reviewed Dragon Quest III HD-2D, I was thrilled by its modernization of Dragon Quest 3 with stunning HD-2D graphics, innovative gameplay mechanics, and user-friendly enhancements. Yet, it managed to honor the original game by preserving a nostalgic, 16-bit pixel-art style.

It’s intriguing to contemplate how Square Enix plans to adapt the initial Dragon Quest games, enhancing them for contemporary players, given that the original Dragon Quest 1 featured a single playable character, while the original Dragon Quest 2 limited parties to just three members.

Based on the sneak peek provided by the teaser trailer for this upcoming Xbox/PC title, it’s evident that there could be significant shifts in store for these traditional Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs). Intriguingly, Dragon Quest 2 appears to introduce a possible fourth character to join its roster.

It remains a mystery what major alterations are in store; we’ll just have to be patient until the fall of 2025 when Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is set to debut on October 30th for Xbox, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
