In this gritty and contentious (yet unfairly so) action film, the Oscar-nominated actor known for his roles in “Transformers” dispenses traditional, straightforward justice. Soon, you’ll be able to decide which camp you belong to when this movie becomes available for free streaming next month.
Under the direction of a filmmaker renowned for movies such as “Training Day” and “The Equalizer” series, and penned by Jonathan Lemkin,
the film titled “Shooter”, which was initially released in 2007 and is adapted from Stephen Hunter’s 1993 novel “Point of Impact”, will be available for free streaming as of June 1. The cast includes Michael Peña, Danny Glover, Kate Mara, Levon Helm, Ned Beatty along with Mark Wahlberg. You can read the movie’s official synopsis below.
Former elite Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger (played by Mark Wahlberg) goes into hiding following an unfortunate mission that ends disastrously. Later, influential government figures persuade him to reemerge to prevent a threat against the U.S. President. As Swagger uncovers deceit, he finds himself pursued across the nation. Rather than laying low, Swagger decides to exact revenge on powerful and corrupt leaders worldwide.
‘Shooter’ Offers the Best Kind of No-Nonsense Throwback Action Thrills
The film titled “Shooter” sparked a significant disagreement among both critics and viewers. Critics found fault with its outdated style in an action movie and what they perceived as a simplistic, convoluted plot centered around conspiracy, deception, and brutal vengeance. As a result of receiving a lower rating of 47% from the former on Rotten Tomatoes, it was labeled with a derogatory green splat. The critical consensus, summarized, states that due to its implausible narrative and numerous plot inconsistencies, “Shooter” struggles to stand out among other generic action-thrillers.
Yet, it seemed that the viewers had contrasting reactions. The film “Shooter” was a massive success among spectators and action enthusiasts, earning an outstanding 80% on the Popcornmeter. It appeared that audiences were captivated by this tale of Wahlberg’s disillusioned veteran transforming into a lone warrior, determined to overthrow “the system.
In the present day, Mark Wahlberg still soars high with action films, and this year saw him team up once more with Mel Gibson for the action-packed thriller “Flight Risk.” Gibson directed from a script penned by Jared Rosenberg. Contrasting their roles in “Shooter,” Wahlberg assumes the role of an antagonist in this tale where Michelle Dockery portrays an Air Marshal escorting a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial. As they traverse the Alaskan wilderness, doubts arise about the authenticity of their pilot, played by Wahlberg himself. Sadly, “Flight Risk” was met with more negative reviews from critics.
Mark Wahlberg is slated to appear in the upcoming crime thriller “Play Dirty,” directed by Shane Black, who also helmed “Iron Man 3” and “The Nice Guys.” In this film, he will portray Parker, a character previously depicted on screen by Mel Gibson and Jason Statham. Additionally, Wahlberg will team up with Michelle Monaghan once more for the action-comedy sequel “The Family Plan 2.” Lastly, he will join Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, known for his role in “Aquaman,” in the crime thriller “By Any Means.”
