Get Ready for a Chilling Expansion of the Ready or Not Mythology in the Upcoming Sequel!

The upcoming sequel to the 2019 horror success “Ready or Not” is being developed, and producer James Vanderbilt has given some intriguing hints about how the new film will delve further into the Le Domas family folklore. During an exclusive interview for his current movie “Fountain of Youth,” now available on Apple TV+, Vanderbilt shared that the creative team was meticulous in their method to extend the story, ensuring that the sequel, named “Ready or Not: Here I Come,” respects the original while offering something new. The emphasis for the sequel is to expand the unsettling tale of the lethal game without oversimplifying its mysterious aspects, striving for a balance between constructing an engaging world and providing a moving emotional journey for returning star Samara Weaving’s character, Grace.

In discussing the sequel, Vanderbilt stated, “We’re approaching it from a few distinct angles.” He added that he didn’t want to reveal too much at this early stage. With such limited information available, all he would divulge is that one reason for the delay in producing the sequel was their determination not to replicate the original movie and, at the same time, preserve the unique blend of horror and comedy from the first film. Essentially, Vanderbilt aims to extend the Ready or Not franchise by enhancing its foundation of horror and dark humor.

As a cinephile, I find the intrigue lies in the continuous argument throughout about what’s genuine and what’s fabricated. Vanderbilt emphasized this conundrum as we move beyond the conclusive ending of the original film. The answer to that question was given at the end of the first movie, making it impossible to return Le Bail to its original form. However, the script by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy cleverly addresses this challenge. From the moment they presented their idea, I knew it was the perfect fit. It’s such an innovative approach to storytelling, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it!

Vanderbilt emphasized that the sequel aims to build upon the mythology without fully explaining everything about it. “It might not sound thrilling, but we find it exhilarating,” he said. “We believe we’ve found the perfect balance between world-building and telling a powerful emotional story. We feel so fortunate that people appreciated the first movie, and we didn’t want to return if it felt like ‘Here they go again.’ If we can’t come up with something that enhances or surpasses it, we’re all content leaving it as is. We’re all really excited about what’s coming next.

Everything We Know About Ready or Not: Here I Come

In October 2024, it was confirmed that Searchlight Pictures is moving forward with the production of Ready or Not: Here I Come, promising more of the intense storyline surrounding Grace Le Domas. Fans of the initial release will be thrilled to learn that the primary creative team is returning to preserve the original’s essence and atmosphere. Joining forces again are writers Dan Busick and Guy Murphy, who penned the first film, as well as directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Radio Silence). This duo has shown a knack for combining horror, humor, and tension in their work, which was evident in the original Ready or Not, as well as films such as SCREAM, Scream VI, and Abigail.

Incorporating Weaving, this upcoming movie is expected to amplify the next chapter’s tension and broaden its universe. To begin with, Ready or Not: Here I Come features Kathryn Newton, recognized for her roles in Abigail and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Furthermore, the much-awaited comeback to the genre includes Sarah Michelle Gellar, renowned for her role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as the cast. Adding to the ensemble’s strength is Elijah Wood, known for his work in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and more recently in Yellowjackets. One of the most buzzed-about newcomers is David Cronenberg, the legendary director behind The Fly and Crimes of the Future, who will be making a rare appearance as an actor. Kevin Durand, who has collaborated with Radio Silence on Abigail in the past, is also part of the sequel, hinting at a role that is starkly different from his character in the vampire film.

Searchlight Pictures has not yet announced an official release date for Ready or Not: Here I Come.
