The final episode of The Last of Us season two has sparked intense discussion online, including from fans who initially appreciated HBO’s television adaptation. Due to alterations in certain scenes and character tones, it seems that the TV show has branched off significantly, becoming its own entity, despite the plot points of the show closely mirroring the Naughty Dog game.
In episode seven of season two, Ellie chases after Abby, leading them to the aquarium and eventually back to the theater for their confrontation with Joel’s killer. The scene ends dramatically as Abby pulls out her gun. To keep viewers on the edge of their seats, the episode concludes there, and we get a sneak peek into season three: Abby finds herself in Seattle’s stadium, waking up on the same day that Ellie first arrives in the city.
Among the various scenes in the TV series, there’s a fresh one that stands out as one of the most peculiar or unusual in the entire production.
While en route to the aquarium, Ellie unexpectedly encounters two WLF soldiers. These soldiers subsequently follow their commander, Isaac, on ships bound for Seraphite island, as depicted when controlling Abby in the game. In the series, after a storm, Ellie seizes an abandoned boat but gets tossed overboard by a massive wave.
Upon arriving on the island of the Seraphites, Ellie is apprehended by them. As she’s being hung and prepared for execution with a sickle, an alarm blares to warn of an invasion. Remarkably, the Seraphites release her, disregarding the gruesome scenes from season two. Amidst the tempest, Ellie manages to get back into her boat and navigates through the storm, eventually reaching the aquarium.
In this particular situation, there’s been much bewilderment and critique due to its seemingly implausible nature. One might wonder why the Seraphites would allow Ellie to escape, given that she vehemently claims she doesn’t belong to the WLF.
This particular scene was initially planned to be in the Naughty Dog game, but it ended up being removed during the editing process due to issues with pacing. As reported by Screen Rant at a press event, Neil Druckmann himself disclosed this information.
Originally, Ellie’s journey to Seraphite Island, which almost led to her being lynched, was part of the game but was removed due to production timing concerns. Subsequently, a series of distressing events unfolded: first, there was that sequence, followed by Alice, and then Mel. During our discussion, we felt that perhaps one event too many had occurred.
