Death Stranding Anime is Currently in Production – Hideo Kojima

As the release date for “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” approaches on June 26, Hideo Kojima has additionally announced that an anime adaptation of the “Death Stranding” series is underway. In a conversation with Vogue Japan (through VGC), Kojima discussed his ambition to explore multiple avenues for “Death Stranding,” including live-action films.

Kojima is currently collaborating with A24 on a live-action film version of Death Stranding. When it comes to transforming video games into visual stories, there are projects such as The Last of Us that remain faithful to their original narratives, and films like Super Mario Bros., which cater more to the fans of the game.

As a gaming enthusiast diving into uncharted territories, I’m eagerly looking forward to exploring the expressive capabilities of live-action cinema by adapting “Death Stranding.” My ambition for this project is sky-high; I aim to create something so captivating and masterful that it earns accolades at prestigious film festivals.

He expressed his desire to explore the creative possibilities of cinema as a movie aficionado, striving to produce a film equivalent to “Death Stranding,” one that could potentially secure accolades at prestigious film festivals such as Cannes or Venice. Interestingly, they are also engaged in producing an anime adaptation.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve always been captivated by Kojima’s words about the future of Kojima Productions. In his radio show, he once mentioned that Death Stranding and its subsequent sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, represented phase 1 for them – a phase focused on developing a distinctive intellectual property and its follow-up. Excitingly, he envisioned phase 2 as the creation of an anime adaptation based on this unique IP that was conceived in phase 1.

In the recent past, Kojima discussed how the narrative of “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” will delve into the topic of fatherhood, but from an unique perspective compared to how it was portrayed in the “Metal Gear” series. He also disclosed that his young father’s demise played a significant role in shaping the stories and themes within the “Metal Gear” universe.

In his explanation, Kojima shared that the loss of his father was a significant motif in the Metal Gear series. These games delve into the idea of transcending one’s parents. On the contrary, Death Stranding focuses on adopting a parental perspective, looking towards the child instead.

In regards to the portrayal of these themes within “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach,” Kojima hinted that they would be delved into through the dynamic between main character Sam Porter Bridges and his adopted daughter, Lou.

Kojima added, “You may believe you understand everything about your son, but there are aspects yet unknown.” In the initial game of Death Stranding, Sam journeys alongside Lou, without delving deeply into who Lou truly is. However, this has shifted in the sequel. It’s much like the curiosity an adoptive parent might feel about their child – they may harbor questions. This was the emotion I aimed to evoke.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is coming exclusively to PS5.
