Game of Thrones Star Rory McCann Never Watched the Whole Series—And Why It Makes Sense

Actor Rory McCann, known for his role as The Hound in Game of Thrones, has surprisingly never watched the series despite being a part of it for over a decade. Currently promoting his upcoming movie “Tornado”, McCann admitted to ComicBook that he’s only seen around five or six episodes out of the 73 in total. He explained that other commitments often interfere with watching the show he helped create, especially since he is familiar with the story and spent years on set. Consequently, McCann hasn’t shown any interest in House of the Dragon yet.

McCann admitted that he hasn’t completed the entire series of ‘Game of Thrones’. He explained, “With it being around 90 hours long, I simply didn’t have the time for it.” However, he did manage to watch a handful of episodes. McCann went so far as to say, “I haven’t really watched the whole show, so I haven’t watched ‘House of the Dragon’ either.” After watching one episode, he felt overwhelmed and decided to prioritize other activities such as sailing and golf. He apologized for not being able to keep up with it, citing a busy schedule.

McCann continued, “I already knew about it, mind you. I had the scripts and was there frequently to rewatch scenes and do dubbing. However, there are some of my personal acquaintances from ‘Game of Thrones’ whom I haven’t actually seen in any episodes. It’s like when we’re at a bar, they say, ‘I heard you were great, I should really watch it.’ And I reply, ‘You scoundrel, I was part of that for eight years!’ ‘Were you a good character or a bad one?’

For McCann, portraying a character on a redemption arc was intricate, given his background. Sandor Clegane, known as The Hound, served loyally under Joffrey Baratheon, hailing from a noble family and demonstrating exceptional combat skills. Yet, he declined knighthood, viewing the system as tainted and insincere. Many fans recall him for his mentorship of Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), though he also carries facial scars from his abusive brother’s torment.

Fans of “Game of Thrones” would have eagerly anticipated knighthood-themed events this year, but HBO shifted its schedule. The network recently disclosed that the upcoming prequel series, titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms“, has been delayed until 2026. Meanwhile, production on “House of the Dragon” Season 2 is ongoing and slated for release next year. If you’re keen to revisit Westeros, the original series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
