James Franco’s Shocking Comeback: Will ‘Hey Joe’ Revive His Career?

At one point, James Franco was the beloved, well-compensated leading man in Hollywood. However, accusations of sexually inappropriate conduct towards young women led to his downfall. Now, he is trying to make a fresh start.

Franco’s upcoming film is titled “Hey Joe” – an Italian drama directed by Claudio Giovannesi. In this movie, Franco portrays Dean Barry (not Joe), a World War II soldier who develops feelings for a woman in Naples while on duty. He impregnates her, but must depart. Decades later, he comes back searching for her and their son. Time will tell what the critics have to say, however, distributors Glass House Distribution are optimistic that it could be a major contender during awards season.

I’m excitedly looking forward to the unveiling of ‘Hey Joe’ towards the end of 2025, available for streaming and cinema viewing. Regarding the allegations against Franco, it seems like the powers that be are choosing to steer clear of that topic in discussion. However, what I can say is, ‘Hey Joe’ left a lasting impression on me since my first screening due to its unique blend of American and Italian storytelling, and James Franco’s deeply moving portrayal. I anticipate this film will touch both audiences and critics during awards season.

Franco was primarily recognized for starring in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy prior to the emergence of allegations against him. He had also earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance in 127 Hours, and continued to act in various roles. However, in 2018, he faced multiple accusations of sexual misconduct, which significantly impacted his acting career in the United States.

Franco Has A Good Feeling About Hey Joe

Last year, Franco discussed the movie in a conversation. He expressed, “‘Oh, this appeals to me. The concept of redemption resonates with me,'” he shared. Moreover, he has a fondness for Italian cinema, especially Claudio’s films. Consequently, his response was an immediate affirmative. When he watched it, he thought, “Claudio Giovannesi, director of ‘Piranhas’; ‘Hey Joe,’ the title. I portray an American character in an Italian production. It couldn’t get any better for me.” Reading the script only made him more enthusiastic as it was excellent.

In the same conversation, he also hinted that being involved in a sexual misconduct allegation had ultimately turned out to be beneficial for him in the long term. He expressed his gratitude for his current employment by stating, “I went through a legal dispute, and during that legal battle I was not employed. But then COVID-19 occurred, so everyone was affected and not working.

He continued by saying, “However, I undeniably utilized the time for what I trust was beneficial. To put it simply, everything about me needed a complete transformation. Consequently, I am proud of the kind of effort I made during that period. And indeed, I wasn’t acting in films, but I certainly was engaged in a great deal of work to reshape myself.

It remains to be seen how Hey Joe will fare in a post-MeToo world.
