Retro Handheld Manufacturer Anbernic Pays Tribute to One of Sony’s Best Form Factors

The PSP Go was, frankly, ahead of its time.

As a gamer, I’ve always been fond of this compact, sleek gadget with its smooth slide mechanism. It was incredibly portable, and I could pick it up and play my games anywhere, long before Microsoft made “Quick Resume” a popular feature on the Xbox Series X|S.

However, in 2009, the world wasn’t yet prepared for a digital-only handheld device like the PSP. Regrettably, many of its most popular games were not accessible through the PS Store at its launch, which led to a rather disappointing outcome for it.

In contrast to the trend of growing larger and larger in handheld devices, the PSP Go remains compact and convenient, featuring a vivid screen and an enjoyable sliding mechanism that delivers a satisfying user experience. And let me tell you, we’re still big fans of it!

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but remember the design concept shared with the unfortunate Sony Xperia Play, a mobile phone that boasted traditional gamepad controls, allowing gamers like me to enjoy our emulated PlayStation 1 games even when we were away from home.

It seems that the upcoming RG Slide from Anbernic is apparently honoring two devices, and its design appears to be reminiscent of the PSP Go, as suggested by the teaser trailer. Notably, the RG Slide features a sleek sliding mechanism, which uncovers the controls situated behind the screen, similar to the operation of the PSP Go.

If it’s able to fit the dimensions and weight comparable to that of Sony’s system and offer a good amount of processing capability, it could potentially be an excellent device for recreating some of your favorite PlayStation games on-the-go. We anticipate further details will be revealed soon.
