June (Elisabeth Moss) survived, though she’s yet to be reunited with her daughter, and things could have been better. However, showrunner Bruce Miller felt that Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski), who caused much distress for June in the early days of Gilead, might have received a harsher conclusion to her storyline.
He admitted, “I harbored the desire to end her life.” He felt this was justified because he considered her a truly abominable individual. He believed it would have been an apt and anonymous demise for her, if she had perished on the side of the road following a push from a train [during the season premiere, where remarkably she survived]. However, he needed to be dissuaded from pushing both her and the child off that very same train.
Instead of opening Season 6 with the death of Serena, Eric Tuchman, one of the co-showrunners, felt it was a risky move. He believed that there was still plenty more story to tell about Serena’s character and exploring these aspects would have been a waste if they lost an actress like Yvonne Strahovski in the final season. In his opinion, such a decision would have been a major oversight.
Tuchman stated, “She’s extraordinary, and I believe we managed to create an ending for Serena that carries a strong impact. Consequently, everyone agreed with this idea, and she made it through. She did fall off the train – taking a few knocks! However, she lived. And I feel that was the correct choice.
Strahovski Didn’t Mind Serena Dying
In her opinion, it seemed fitting that Serena’s character met her demise. She felt this ending would provide a sense of fulfillment for viewers, given that it was intense, heart-wrenching, and emotionally charged. Moreover, she believed it would stir up feelings among fans who wished for her character to switch allegiances, as many have expressed.
She certainly felt it was justified, yet we found ourselves in a place filled with hope, possibly inspiring, deeply contemplative, and profoundly moving – yet heart-wrenching, she explained. It’s uncertain if Serena will make an appearance in the upcoming series, The Testaments, as another character who seems to straddle moral boundaries.
The Handmaid’s Tale is currently available for streaming on Hulu.
