One of the dearest horror series of this century is considered a classic. The initial film was released approximately 25 years back and built an extraordinary reputation. The franchise has continued to thrive through the early 2000s, the 2010s, and now into the 2020s, with the latest addition, “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” acting as the highly-awaited follow-up to the original legacy.
For over two decades, the final stories I’ve encountered in films, books, and comic books have followed a familiar pattern. They revolve around a protagonist who witnesses a grim future where they and many others perish in a tragic mass casualty incident. However, when they manage to save several lives, Death pursues the survivors as retribution for meddling with fate’s design. The series “Bloodlines” introduced a slight variation, as its heroine doesn’t have a vision but is marked by Death due to her grandmother’s past actions of averting a calamity years ago. Yet, these tales have sparked intrigue among us viewers, encouraging us to pay closer attention to the seemingly inanimate objects around us.
Airplanes Don’t Feel Very Safe
Final Destination and Final Destination 5
In the initial occurrence of events depicted in the Final Destination series, the incident unfolded in the 2000 film. The main character, Alex Browning, was about to embark on a school trip to Paris via Volée Airlines Flight 180 at an airport. While inside the restroom, he encountered the song “Rocky Mountain High” by John Denver, finding it unsettling due to Denver’s tragic plane crash death. As he stepped onto the flight, his apprehension intensified. However, his intuition proved correct as he foresaw the plane catching fire, disintegrating, and ultimately exploding, leading to a devastating accident that claimed the lives of everyone aboard, including himself.
In the closing moments of Final Destination 5, there was an unexpected turn of events. The main characters, Sam and Molly, seemed to have escaped death’s grasp and were living their lives normally. However, in the final scene, they board a plane for France. Things appear to be going well until they spot a commotion in the aisle involving Alex Browning and other passengers being forced off the plane. A flight attendant reveals that Alex had a premonition about what was happening. As Sam recognizes the impending disaster, the plane takes off, but he’s unable to prevent the explosion that follows.
Swimming Pool Drains Suck
The Final Destination
In the throes of “Final Destination 4”, the intensity and violence were cranked up several notches, with a dash of eye-popping 3D for good measure. The filmmaker Hunt Wynorski made an unforgettable entrance right off the bat in this installment, and his demise was a testament to that. He was a boorish, grating character, with his very first lines in the movie serving as a perfect example – he callously remarks to his girlfriend, Janet, and Nick’s girlfriend, Lori, that they’re only at McKinley Speedway to witness a crash. His treatment of women was particularly repugnant, and a trip to the local swimming pool only served to underscore this.
Following an abrupt, shocking, and distressing scene involving intimacy, Hunt decides to relax by the swimming pool. A mischievous child sprays water from a gun onto his phone, and later, Hunt accidentally drops his cherished coin that he had been fiddling with throughout the movie into the pool. The coin rolls towards the drain, causing him to dive in after it. As he follows the coin, the drain catches his swim trunks. The pressure in the drain is manipulated by Death, making it stronger and keeping Hunt submerged at the bottom of the pool. In a desperate struggle for survival, the drain suddenly pulls out Hunt’s internal organs through his rectum, causing a gory explosion of blood and entrails from the pump. This grisly sight traumatized all the children present and led many people to avoid swimming pool drains for more than a decade.
Nail Guns are Actually Pretty Dangerous
Final Destination 3
In Final Destination 3, the pivotal disaster unfolds at a local amusement park. Among the characters, the protagonist Wendy, finds herself on an ill-fated prize rollercoaster. However, she becomes alarmed by its apparent unsafe conditions which prompts her to voice her concerns loudly, causing a commotion and physical altercation among some attendees. Ultimately, this leads Erin Ulmer and Ian McKinley to disembark from the rollercoaster unwittingly, setting themselves up for a deadly encounter with Death.
It’s essential to understand that power tools can be incredibly hazardous, regardless of who is in control. Therefore, when we see Erin and Ian working at a hardware store, it seems like disaster is about to strike. There are birds flying everywhere, forklifts out of control, and planks tumbling down around them. Just as the stock begins to fall off the shelves, Erin becomes engulfed in sawdust, leading her to stumble. In her fall, a nail gun accidentally activates, firing numerous nails into her head from behind, exiting her face. Sadly, this isn’t one of the more extraordinary death scenes in the series, as nail gun accidents are relatively common.
Needles, the Human Body, and Death Don’t Mix
Final Destination 5 and Final Destination: Bloodlines
In the movie “Final Destination 5,” Isaac Palmer is portrayed as a tech-savvy counterpart to the character Hunt from “FD4.” A deceased coworker leaves him a spa massage voucher, which leads him to the Ming Yun Spa. Here, he displays disregard for others and inappropriately advances towards the receptionist. He receives a massage and acupuncture treatment, but disaster strikes while he’s still hooked up to the needles. A fire erupts, causing him to fall from the table onto the needles and into a pool of alcohol. While the needles certainly wouldn’t be pleasant, they don’t ultimately cause his demise. Instead, a Buddha statue comes crashing down and fatally crushes Isaac’s head.
The movie “Final Destination: Bloodlines” incorporates needles into its plot, as the oldest Campbell child, Erik, works at a tattoo parlor. In a scene previewed in the film’s trailer, he pierces someone’s tongue and gets himself tattooed, both of which involve needles. However, the most nerve-wracking moments revolve around Erik’s body modifications. The same scene shows a decorative chain detaching from the ceiling, lifting him off the ground by his septum ring. Later in the movie, his piercings lead to his demise, as he becomes trapped with an overpowered MRI machine that violently removes his facial and nipple piercings, as well as his Prince Albert piercing, from his skin in a gruesome scene that could potentially discourage people from pursuing body modifications, similar to how “FD5” impacted the popularity of acupuncture.
Getting Caught in an Escalator Doesn’t Seem Impossible
The Final Destination
As a passionate cinephile, I’d say that among the “Final Destination” series, one standout film is the one where multiple disaster premonitions unfold. The narrative kicks off when characters named Lori and Janet decide to indulge in some retail therapy at the mall and catch a movie. Unbeknownst to them, Death sets a blaze in the background. My character, Nick, senses danger and manages to get Lori out of the theater just before it goes kaput, thus saving her life!
Fleeing from the theater, further blasts ensue, shattering the mall structure nearby. They attempt an exit via the escalator but debris from the collapsing building hammers the stairway of the still-functioning escalator. Lori’s plunge into the machinery and gradual compression by the gears in a vision is a chilling spectacle, despite its imagined nature.
Bridges Aren’t Unbreakable
Final Destination 5
In the opening scene of Final Destination 5, I find myself among the team from Presage Paper, all set to hop aboard a company bus for a retreat. The atmosphere is rather ordinary until we’re halted on the North Bay Bridge during construction and high winds. This combination, it seems, was destined to be perilous.
In “Final Destination 5,” the story unfolds when Sam Lawton notices strong gusts rocking the bus and causing damage to a nearby bridge. As the workers abandon ship, the structure weakens and collapses, tragically impaling one individual on a passing yacht’s mast. The road deteriorates further, forcing the survivors to traverse a single beam while vehicles plummet, among them a tanker leaking hot tar and a truck carrying metal bars. Sam heroically guides some colleagues to safety just as the premonition materializes, coinciding with the bridge beginning to splinter. Bridges are usually sources of apprehension for many, but “Final Destination 5” took this unease to a whole new level.
The Dentists Aren’t the Only Scary Part of Dental Work
Final Destination 2
In the newest “Final Destination” film titled “Bloodlines”, Richard Harmon was cast as Erik Campbell. Throughout promotional events for the movie, Harmon frequently discussed that his preferred death sequence in the series is Tim Carpenter’s from “Final Destination 2”. The chilling scene of a young character’s demise by a falling glass pane is already unsettling, but the lead-up to his death has undeniably intensified the widespread anxiety associated with dental visits.
The day after the Route 23 accident, Tim and his mom, Nora, visit the dentist, but the experience is far from soothing due to nearby construction causing a ruckus and pigeons repeatedly flying into the windows, even during Tim’s treatment. Matters worsen when the dentist switches to gas anesthesia because of the pigeon disturbance, only for him to step out of the room, leaving Tim immobilized. The oxygen then shuts off, and a decorative pufferfish unexpectedly falls into Tim’s mouth, obstructing his airway and causing him to suffocate until, miraculously, the dental assistant removes it at the last second. Despite this near-death experience, the very thought of the dentist approaching Tim’s mouth with needles or drills continues to make one shudder, and watching him jump while holding those tools is enough to instill a bit more apprehension towards dental care.
Racing Cars are Bound to Crash Eventually
The Final Destination
The movie “The Final Destination” begins with an instant surge of excitement, featuring heavy rock music and quick glimpses of the bustling McKinley Speedway. When the principal characters appear, the first thing we hear is Hunt expressing his enthusiasm for the crashes. Remarkably, he manages to dodge a grisly fate as his friend Nick experiences a premonition of a catastrophic accident, although they both narrowly avoid witnessing it directly.
An unintentional accident involving a silver-colored vehicle with the number 45 occurs, leading to a chain reaction of events. A tool left by the pit team accidentally ejected, narrowly missing multiple vehicles but striking a red car instead, piercing its tire and causing it to roll over repeatedly before its tires broke through the safety barrier. This incident claimed the first victim shortly before another vehicle ignited and hurtled into the spectator stands. The chaotic scene, scattered flames, and questionable structure led to the grandstand collapsing as well. Although racetrack crashes are frequent, it’s not unimaginable for the crowd to be at risk too.
Gymnastics Can Create Human Pretzels
Final Destination 5
In “Final Destination 5,” Candice Hooper is presented as an intern who is romantically involved with her boss at the failing Presage Paper. She is the initial victim in Sam’s premonition, plummeting to her death when the road collapses beneath her. Unlike others in the story, she doesn’t survive for long; instead, Death claims her life immediately, causing her to fall and impale herself on a sailboat mast. This grisly sequence occurs before Sam could manage to save her.
After the unfortunate incident, Candice swiftly continues with her life by attending gymnastics practice within a few days. However, the gym, despite being bustling, seems unsafe, with leaks and loose screws that could potentially harm gymnasts executing complex stunts. Unfortunately, during one of her high beam routines, a bowl of powder accidentally falls, obscuring Candice’s vision, causing her to panic, execute a premature flip, and land incorrectly, resulting in her body folding into an extremely painful position. This unfortunate accident is undeniably one of the most brutal in the franchise’s history.
Lawn Mowers Still Wreak Havoc
The Final Destination and Final Destination: Bloodlines
In the less ordinary, somewhat humorous scene preceding the catastrophic McKinley Speedway incident in “The Final Destination,” I found myself as a film enthusiast, observing a mother named Samantha hand her two young boys tampons, intending to shield their ears from the deafening noises. Little did she know, she was third on Death’s list in “FD4.” The narrative unfolds with her sons frolicking nearby, flinging pebbles at a sign as Samantha enters the beauty salon. Upon exiting, she warns her boys that she’s keeping tabs on them, only to witness a man riding a lawnmower sending one of those stones flying directly into her eye. Though this might seem implausible, the experts from “MythBusters” confirmed it as a possibility, and similar occurrences have been documented in reality.
At the Campbell family barbecue, a rake is positioned near the trampoline, and a shard of glass rests in the ice bucket. In an unfortunate turn of events, the rake tips over due to the weight of the glass, causing the lawnmower to start as Howard Campbell steps on the glass and loses balance. Before anyone can react, the mower rolls onto Howard’s face, potentially making Samantha’s landscaping-related death look less brutal by comparison.
