In simpler terms, Jean Grey, known as Marvel Girl and The Phoenix, is one of Marvel’s most powerful mutants, often referred to as an Omega-level mutant. She stands out among all telekinetics, with her abilities unmatched except by figures like Professor X in telepathy. Over the years, she has both threatened and saved the universe multiple times with her near-limitless powers. Now, there’s a new mutant on the scene who could potentially match Jean’s power. Previously believed to be deceased, Jean’s sister Sara has reappeared, and it seems that her mutant abilities might have the potential to drastically alter the Marvel Universe. Cable appears particularly concerned about this development.
Who Is Sara Grey-Bailey?
Sara, previously believed to be Jean’s elder human sibling, was later revealed to be a mutant. She was a strong proponent for mutant rights, often standing alongside her spouse against the daily bigotry and discrimination faced by mutants. In X-Factor volume one issue #12, Sara and her husband Paul (an unfortunate moniker) vanished, presumed dead. Their offspring, Gailyn and Joey, continued their parents’ mission until they too met their untimely end at the hands of the Shi’ar Death Commandos in Uncanny X-Men #467. The aliens aimed to eliminate every descendant of the Grey lineage; only Jean and Cable managed to survive this purge. Now, after approximately four decades of being assumed deceased, Sara has reappeared and regained her mutant abilities.
Where Was Sara All This Time?
For some time now, Jean Grey has embarked on a space-faring journey in her own comic book series. In the latest storyline, Jean found herself battling against Thanos, a young girl she empowered with a fragment of the Phoenix Force named Adani, and malevolent entities known as the Dark Gods who were using Adani to conquer every universe. It goes without saying that Jean has been quite occupied. Just when Jean had managed to repel the Dark Gods’ multiversal invasion, she received a psychic communication from a woman claiming to be her sibling, stating that she is still alive and has been seeking her.
11th Issue: The storyline commences as Jean experiences recurring nightmares involving demons abducting and slaying her sister, leaving her helpless to intervene. This terrifying scenario has been happening ever since she received a message. Cyclops, connected mentally with Jean, offers solace and proposes that he doubts it was indeed Sara who contacted her, but if Jean is convinced it was her, she should explore the White Hot Room. This peculiar realm serves as a sanctuary for the Phoenix Force when it’s not active in our universe. It rejuvenates and develops there whenever Jean meets her untimely end, which does occur occasionally. Lately, this place has been transformed into New Krakoa, a paradise for mutants who died prematurely.
Jean endeavors to enter the Blazing Pure Room, but her access to it unexpectedly crumbles, as if an assailant or force is targeting the Blazing Pure Room itself. On the brink of mental collapse, Jean perceives her sister’s voice and faints. Upon regaining consciousness, Jean discovers Sara very much alive and greeting her to Greyhaven – a cosmic city for mutants, named after Sara due to her selfless aid provided here. After her mysterious disappearance, Sara gained consciousness of her own mutant power; the ability to activate the latent powers in other mutants. All of the mutants residing in Greyhaven possessed dormant or undeveloped abilities, which Sara has since elevated significantly. The telepaths dwelling there pool their skills to enable Sara to access the Blazing Pure Room and summon Jean, eventually reuniting the sisters.
A Loving Reunion With Disastrous Consequences
It appears that the incident involving the White Hot Room had far-reaching consequences, impacting not only Jean but seemingly the entire cosmos. This ripple effect was even noticed centuries later by Cable, who is actually a clone of Jean and the son of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor. The force of this event hit him like the universe collapsing upon him, prompting his decision to travel back to the present in order to question his stepmother about it. Meanwhile, while Jean is overjoyed at their reunion, she also harbors a sense of foreboding regarding their future. The last page shows them embracing amidst the ruins of a devastated planet, with Cable’s metallic arm bleeding and adrift in space.
Regardless of how events unfold, it’s clear that Sara will play a crucial role in the upcoming storyline, as her unique power to bring out hidden abilities in others could prove decisive. If Sara manages to unleash Jean’s untapped power, it would undoubtedly create seismic waves across the universe. The stage is set for a dramatic confrontation between Jean and her family members, including her sister and estranged stepson. Torn between her loyalties towards the Greys and the Summers, Jean faces an agonizing choice that promises to be devastatingly intense.
