Approximately three decades later, the long-awaited sequel for “Happy Gilmore” has been announced. But if you’re eager to rewatch the 1996 original prior to the upcoming comedy sequel, you’ll have to subscribe to a different streaming platform.

Starting June 1st, you can stream the movie ‘Happy Gilmore’, directed by Dennis Dugan and written by Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy, on Hulu. The film revolves around the character Happy Gilmore, portrayed by Sandler, a struggling hockey player who unexpectedly excels at golf to prevent his grandmother’s home from being foreclosed. Christopher McDonald plays Happy’s rival, famous golfer Shooter McGavin, while Julie Bowen, known later for ‘Modern Family’, takes on the role of Happy’s love interest, Virginia Venit. The late Carl Weathers stars as Derick “Chubbs” Peterson, a retired pro golfer who helps Happy learn the game.

Over the last ten years, Sandler has been producing films for Netflix, starting with the satirical Western spoof, “The Ridiculous 6” (2015). Since then, he’s delivered approximately one new film to the streaming platform each year. These have encompassed a variety of genres, such as dramedies like “Sandy Wexler” (2017), stand-up specials like “100% Fresh” (2018), and the “Murder Mystery” duology. Although these will continue to be exclusive to Netflix, it’s worth noting that four of Sandler’s comedies made prior to his Netflix deal will also become available on Hulu starting June 1: “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” (2008), “Grown Ups” (2010), “Just Go With It” (2011), and “Grown Ups 2” (2013).

Happy Gilmore 2 Arrives in July

Details concerning the plot of Happy Gilmore 2 have yet to be revealed, but it appears that Happy may return from retirement to face off against his old foe Shooter. Both Sandler and McDonald are returning for this sequel, with McDonald hinting earlier in the month that the film’s humor is something he particularly enjoys about working on Adam Sandler’s movies.

As a die-hard movie fan, I’m thrilled to share that some familiar faces are coming back for the sequel! Bowen, Dugan as Doug Thompson, Allen Covert as Otto, and Ben Stiller as Hal L. will be reprising their roles. Joining the crew this time are fresh talents like Bad Bunny, who’ll play Happy’s caddie, and Kym Whitley, portraying Bessie, a member of Happy’s support group. Adam Sandler and Fred Wolf teamed up again to pen the script for Happy Gilmore 2, with Kyle Newacheck taking the director’s chair from Thompson. Newacheck previously collaborated with Sandler on his 2019 Netflix comedy flick, Murder Mystery.

Similar to the first movie, Happy Gilmore 2 will feature a star-studded cast including Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Scott Mescudi, Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie, and Nick Swardson. Additionally, renowned professional golfers such as Keegan Bradley, Bryson DeChambeau, John Daly, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Jack Nicklaus, Corey Pavin, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Lee Trevino, and Will Zalatoris are expected to make cameos in the sequel, appearing as themselves.

Happy Gilmore 2 will be released on Netflix on July 25.
