This captivating 5-minute video, available below, brings together the brilliant minds behind the game from Hangar 13 and Stormind Games. In this insightful discussion, you’ll hear directly from key players like game director Alex Cox, lead writer Matthew Aitken, art director Steve Noakes, and more, as they share their thoughts on the upcoming masterpiece.
Stormind Games’ senior project manager, Salvo Fallica, adds his thoughts on the game’s title, stating “Our focus has consistently been on making every aspect of the game feel genuinely realistic.” In this developer diary, authenticity is a recurring theme, as both Cox and Aitken discuss the measures the developers have taken to make Mafia: The Old Country feel just right.
In the video, Aitken emphasized that the specifics are crucial for maintaining the player’s immersion, which was then followed by Cox discussing how deeply rooted the game is in the actual history of the Sicilian Mafia. According to Cox, the studio enlisted real-world experts to assist them in bringing their vision for the game to life and providing historical context.

Noakes discussed the careful consideration given to even minor details in some aspects of the game “Mafia: The Old Country”. He particularly mentioned the knives, which are a part of the game, and how much effort the studio put into determining what the knives would look like during the era in which “Mafia: The Old Country” is set.
Noakes mentioned that when it comes to the game’s knives, there isn’t much information about them. This required us to delve quite deeply. We discovered a small machine shop where a man and his son were still crafting knives by hand, each one carrying unique regional styles, almost like their signature marks, if you will. This experience was something we wouldn’t have encountered any other way.
Art director Jakub Vavrik discussed the distinct feel that the new game “Mafia: The Old Country” will have compared to its predecessors. He explained that while earlier games in the series were primarily set in densely populated cities, the upcoming title shifts to a more natural and rural setting in Sicily.
