At present, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is undergoing a period of change, as half of the original Avengers are no longer around. Consequently, other superheroes such as Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man have taken up the mantle, battling global catastrophes and managing to survive. Yet, these new heroes seem uninterested in joining a team for now. In stark contrast, Captain America is eager to reassemble the Avengers following the events depicted in Captain America: Brave New World. He enlists Joaquin Torres as the new Falcon and appears to be on track to emulate Steve Rogers’ legacy.
The closing of Thunderbolts leaves Sam Wilson perplexed when Valentina Allegra de Fontaine discloses that the team is now called “New Avengers.” After reforming and serving as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for a year, the villains accept their new positions. But Sam isn’t the only one who should be confused, because another crucial character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe shares an equal stake in this situation.)
The Avengers & New Avengers Aren’t Getting Off on the Right Foot
Sam’s predicament with the New Avengers involves multiple aspects. Firstly, the name holds significance, which Valentina has used carelessly to shield herself following the Sentry project’s chaos in New York. This isn’t something Sam can ignore, so he decides to legally protect the name. However, this move doesn’t sit well with Yelena Belova and her allies because they are genuinely trying to make a difference. The situation is particularly troubling for Bucky Barnes as he and Sam share a strong friendship, but their views on this matter differ significantly.
In the Thunderbolts post-credits scene, although Bucky doesn’t delve deep into the problems they face, it’s reasonable to assume that John Walker, another New Avenger, might be linked to some of these issues. The U.S government appointed Walker as the new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier following Sam’s decision to give up the shield. This appointment led to a series of troubles. Walker often overstepped boundaries, and after losing his friend during a clash with the Flag-Smashers, he ended up killing an innocent man in public.
Sam’s experiences with Steve, encounters with Walker, and his fight against the Red Hulk lead him to doubt the intentions of the government. It seems that individuals such as Valentina are more interested in personal gain, using the Avengers as a stepping stone for their own political advancement. However, there is one individual who has links to the government and should be included in the discussion regarding the Avengers versus the New Avengers.
Nick Fury Knows What It Takes to Put an Avengers Team Together in the MCU
Following the demolition and dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury has had quite a few intriguing years. He’s engaged in battles against a faction of radical Skrulls during “Secret Invasion” and supported Captain Marvel in her fight against Dar-Been from the vantage point of the S.A.B.E.R. space station. Fury oversees an orbital defense initiative, addressing various extraterrestrial perils Earth encounters. Despite being swamped with this responsibility, Fury continues to collaborate with super-powered individuals like Monica Rambeau, who assists him on the space station.
As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but admit that Nick Fury’s insistence on assembling extraordinary individuals is deeply rooted in his time with S.H.I.E.L.D., an experience that opened his eyes to the existence of heroes like Captain Marvel and the elusive Skrulls. This realization led him to initiate the Avengers, a team designed to bring together remarkable people. With Tony Stark and the gang, he managed to save the world on numerous occasions, proving the power of unity. Unfortunately, Fury found himself in a challenging position when the Avengers disbanded during Captain America: Civil War, leaving him unable to intervene and mend the rift. However, this time around, there’s no room for excuses, especially since S.A.B.E.R. seems to be aware of the Fantastic Four’s ship, which makes an appearance in Thunderbolts.
In “Avengers: Doomsday,” Fury is compelled to revisit Earth as a new threat approaches. Instead of wasting time on trivial disputes, he’ll emphasize the perils lurking in the Sacred Timeline and beyond. At this juncture, it will be essential for Sam’s team and the New Avengers to align their efforts and take appropriate action together.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
