Fans of him will be thrilled to learn that his critically-adored film is set to debut on a fresh streaming platform.
Starting June 20, I’ll have the pleasure of streaming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on Prime Video, and those who haven’t caught up with it yet will finally get their chance. The Sonic the Hedgehog films have been instrumental in winning over many viewers, myself included.
In 2020, Sonic the Hedgehog made his big-screen debut, but there were some issues regarding his initial design. Despite this, voiced by Ben Schwartz, the speedy blue hedgehog achieved significant success. Both “Sonic the Hedgehog” and its sequel raked in a substantial amount of money, yet they lacked one crucial element necessary for creating a successful franchise: positive critical reception. It was only with the release of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” that this changed. The film was lauded as a triumph, striking an excellent balance between emotion and humor. Jim Carrey’s double role as Ivo and Gerald Robotnik received much acclaim in particular.
As a devoted fan, I must admit, Jim Carrey’s return as Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman) in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise was a cause for great excitement. There were moments of uncertainty, given his contemplation of retirement at the time. However, he eventually chose to revisit the universe, stating in an interview with AP News that “I came back because I get to play a genius, which is quite a stretch. And let’s face it, I had a lot of expenses and frankly, I needed the money.” This decision turned out to be financially prudent, as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 grossed an impressive $492.2 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise to date.
Will There Be Sonic the Hedgehog 4?
Given the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it was only a matter of time before another installment was produced, and indeed, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has been given the go-ahead. It seems plausible that the characters of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic will feature in this new game, as they made an appearance in a post-credits scene at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, it remains to be seen whether Jim Carrey will reprise his role for this sequel. While there’s an option for him to step back if he so chooses, fans are eagerly anticipating his return.
Carrey expressed that he is always receptive to new ideas. If something appeals to him as enjoyable, he’s more than willing to take part. He also mentioned that he doesn’t feel bound by anything in life unless it piques his interest.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will release March 19, 2027.
