These remarkable beings are the embodiments of chakra, separated from the original ten-tailed beast that graced our planet. The core nine Tailed Beasts have played pivotal roles in shaping the history of the ninja world, often serving as powerful weapons or calamities. Our beloved Naruto himself carries the nine-tailed fox within him, while the Akatsuki organization has been on a relentless pursuit to collect the Tailed Beasts for their grand scheme.

Considering all that we’ve discussed, it might surprise you to learn that there were relatively few instances where these chakra beasts made an appearance. Yet, when they did, they truly stood out due to their massive size, incredible power, and distinctive designs. Each of the Tailed Beasts boasts unique and captivating features, often combining aspects from various animals to create awe-inspiring chimera-like structures. This analysis will examine the design notes for each Tailed Beast, ranking them from least intriguing to most.

10) Ten-Tails

As a personification of the divine Tree Deity known as the Ten-Tails, it stands as the mightiest among the Tailed Beasts in the entire Naruto universe. The Ten-Tails played a pivotal role in Madara’s grand scheme and possessed an intimidating power that could effortlessly confront the combined forces of the Allied Shinobi Nations with ease. However, its physical form was somewhat unimpressive compared to its prodigious might.

In a more casual and simplified manner: The monster resembling a giant tree, known as the Ten-Tails, has a wooden exterior and an enormous mouth, but it’s quite plain beyond that. Its form is simple and almost shapeless, making it the least striking design among the group. It’s debatable whether this simplicity was deliberate, but considering the Ten-Tails lacks autonomy and personality, its design follows suit, being rather dull.

9) Chōmei (Seven-Tails)

Chōmei, in its design, presents a minor issue: it possesses six wings and a tail, totaling seven tails – a characteristic that ranks it ninth on the list. While the idea of a giant insect is fresh and reasonably executed further down the line, the fusion of stag beetle elements with dragonfly wings and body doesn’t feel harmonious overall.

The armor’s theme is entertaining and effectively emphasizes the massive horns on its head, but unfortunately, the color gradient of the armor doesn’t harmonize well with the green and yellow scale pattern that dominates the rest of its body, creating a fragmented appearance. Nevertheless, the Seven-Tails isn’t devoid of clever design decisions, and if we were ranking them based on their baby forms, Chōmei would probably take the top spot; the endearing larval design with miniature tail stubs is undeniably cute, making it a thoughtful touch to showcase their growth process.

8) Matatabi (Two-Tails)

In essence, the competition gets tougher as we proceed, and many of these Tailed Beasts can swap places with those above or below them. As for Matatabi, it boasts several strong points in its design – the color scheme is appealing, its flames burn intensely, and its eyes, being of different colors, are captivating.

From my perspective as a fan, the captivating aspect of Matatabi lies in its fiery nature, which is indeed a powerful selling point. However, this very trait can make it seem less intimidating and more like a skill being employed, rather than an overwhelming beast. Compared to other ranked entities, its blue flaming design, though unique and intriguing, appears to be overshadowed by more vibrant color schemes or intricate designs that some higher-ranked creatures possess.

7) Isobu (Three-Tails)

In a different phrasing: Isobu, like other Tailed Beasts, frequently appears in the story without a host, allowing us to appreciate its entire appearance. Unlike a typical giant turtle, Isobu’s three-tailed turtle design has unique aspects that make it visually appealing.

In an exhilarating manner, I find Isobu captivating with its harmonious color scheme. The exterior, crafted from a smoky gray shell, contrasts beautifully with the vibrant red-pink interior carapace. Every hue is accentuated by the intricate spiky design that revolves around the shell, adding depth to its appearance. Lastly, Isobu’s missing eye adds a narrative touch, making it seem more lifelike and authentic. It carries the scars of battles well-earned, further emphasizing its living nature.

6) Saiken (Six-Tails)

Among the six entries, the oversized, six-legged slug-like creature, Saiken, stands out. As I mentioned earlier, it showcases the magnification of bug-like traits in an impressive manner, while maintaining the color scheme of the creature. The depiction of Saiken emphasizes its sliminess, which aligns perfectly with its slug characteristics. Similar to a real slug, Saiken boasts two stalks for eyes atop its massive head and a wriggling body consistently covered in slime.

In addition to being beautifully designed without excessive elements, Saiken’s appearance also complements its abilities perfectly. Saiken can emit slime from various parts of its body or spit it out from its mouth, leveraging its slimy design to enhance its combat prowess. Despite Lady Katsuyu, a giant slug, being introduced in the world earlier, Saiken manages to stand out with its streamlined and striking design.

5) Kokuō (Five-Tails)

Among our listings, the Five-Tailed Beast, Kokuō, ranks fifth and lies midway between superior and inferior designs. This creature bears a unique equine-like appearance with a five-tailed horsetail end and a head resembling a dolphin with horns. Consistent across its body is a color scheme similar to many previous Tailed Beasts, with highlights on the horns, hooves, and eyes for added distinction.

Despite being smaller, he excels in hand-to-hand combat due to his body’s unique capabilities. However, it’s important to remember that he is not purely humanoid; his appearance is distinctly bestial, adorned with a royal-looking horned crown, elongated, blunted mandrill teeth, and spines running down his back and along each of his four tails. The design manages to be unique without distracting from the larger narrative.

3) Gyūki (Eight-Tails)

The eight-tentacled giant Ox known as Gyūki is greatly admired, and rightfully so. Similar to other designs we’ve created, Gyūki is a chimera, blending characteristics of land mammals with marine creatures. In this unique case, the creature boasts eight tentacle-like tails, which are a twist on traditional tails as they sprout from the massive body of an ox. Initially, the Seven-Tailed Beast was ranked lower due to its atypical tails, but Gyūki builds upon that idea and adds depth to it.

Initially, an octopus is distinguished by its eight tentacles instead of random wings and a tail, which sets it apart from other creatures. This design choice is intentional rather than accidental. Moreover, the tentacles are often utilized in combat, particularly for grappling and swimming. In some instances, viewers witness the Eight-tailed Beast employing ink to disorient its opponents. Similarly, Gyūki, a character resembling an Ushi-oni, is depicted with a missing horn from a past battle against the Raikage. This detail adds depth to the design’s backstory and lore. Moreover, similar to other cursed beings, Shukaku bears distinctive seal markings across his body, symbolizing his sealing jutsu ability.

This is the first Tailed Beast we encounter, and it immediately presents itself as a fearsome, demonic figure before revealing any information about its siblings or origins. Interestingly, the color of Kurama’s fur resembles the reddish-orange hue shared by Naruto and his mother, Kushina, which creates a cohesive visual narrative among the three.
