Over time, DC Comics has created numerous characters, many of which may not become popular. Some characters are deliberately quirky, like Condiment King or Bouncing Boy. In other cases, the oddity is initially hidden. A character can become strange or off-putting if their backstory is poorly developed. With hindsight, readers might find reasons to dislike a character’s introduction. Indeed, one such DC Comics character has a rich history but hasn’t been seen for years. Considering his past, we won’t miss him if he never reappears again. This character is Comet the Super-Horse.
At first glance, it might appear that there’s nothing amiss with the super-horse named Comet, given his striking white coat. However, beneath this exterior lies an intriguing and somewhat peculiar history that may not endear him to readers as they delve deeper. We assure you of this fact.
Comet’s Introduction
Comet the Super-Horse, who made his debut in 1962, is deeply entrenched in comic book lore. His origins may strike a sense of nostalgia and familiarity, as he promptly joined the Legion of Super-Pets alongside Krypto and other pets belonging to Superman. However, there are some peculiar aspects to his backstory, such as his initial identity as a centaur named Biron from ancient Greece. That’s right! Due to magical potion mix-ups, he now resembles an ordinary horse. He requested Circe to brew a potion that would transform him into a human, but instead, he ended up with one that transformed him completely into a horse.
Although that aspect of his past might not be particularly terrible, it pales in comparison to the events that follow. Once more, Biron found himself stranded on an asteroid. This predicament, however, proved fortuitous as it allowed him to witness Supergirl’s comet hurtling towards Earth. Intrigued, he followed, setting off a bizarre and awkward chain of incidents.
Comet’s History with Grooming
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I found myself drawn to the captivating tale of Supergirl, where her world intertwines with the narrative of Comet’s story. Intrigued by the prospect of watching a film centered around horses, it wasn’t too surprising that equine dreams started gracing my slumbering thoughts. Yet, this seemingly innocent dreamscape took an unsettling turn when the ancient centaur Biron intruded upon them, using his telepathic prowess to insinuate himself into my subconscious mind. Given his advanced age and my adolescent superhero status, it’s hard not to perceive such an intrusion as inappropriate and invasive.
Unfortunately, that’s only the start of the tale. Supergirl then encounters her perfect steed, literally, whom she names Comet the Super-Horse. This pair appeared to be a match made in heaven, with their abilities harmonizing beautifully. Comet embarked on numerous adventures, often joining forces with the Legion of Super-Pets and at other times accompanying his Supergirl. It’s important to note that at this stage in the story, Supergirl remains unaware of Biron’s past.
Doubling Down on Concerning Trends
In a twist of unconventional magic from comic books, I, Comet, found myself in the good graces of Prince Endor. Through an intricate tale, he granted me the power to transform into a human whenever a comet passed over Earth. The story takes a peculiar turn when, under the disguise of a passing comet, I found employment at a rodeo, unbeknownst to Supergirl who was smitten by this new character. Unaware that Bronco Bill was none other than her horse, she developed feelings for him. It appears that I, in my human form, may have groomed Supergirl, never disclosing my true identity or intentions.
Regrettably, this tale doesn’t reach its conclusion here. At a certain point, Comet yearned for something beyond his cometary existence and endeavored to transform into a human. This act ignited a chain of perplexing occurrences, such as him inadvertently donning the attire of an outlaw and locking lips with Supergirl in front of her peers, who seemed unfazed by the notion of her dating grown men. There’s a hint of poetic justice in this scene, as Supergirl swiftly presumes that Bronco Bill is indeed the outlaw and sets off to apprehend him. This decision would ultimately bring heartache for Supergirl, with Comet (once more in equine form) observing from a distance. Certainly an uncomfortable situation.
Eventually, Biron’s tenure as Comet the Super-Horse didn’t last indefinitely. Comet started becoming less frequent in comic books, eventually leading to his entire origin story being rewritten. We’re perfectly fine with this turn of events, as we believe Supergirl deserved a more wholesome character than the stalkerish groomer who secretly observed her from afar. Regardless of DC Comics choosing to keep that backstory concealed, we can’t imagine ourselves feeling at ease if Comet reappears in any capacity.
