Creator Nic Pizzolatto, responsible for the critically-acclaimed crime drama on HBO, True Detective, thinks there may be a chance for Detectives Cohle and Hart, portrayed by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in Season 1, to return. The characters were exclusive to the initial season due to its anthology structure; however, their captivating presence has significantly contributed to the show’s enduring popularity. Fans have longed for their reappearance, and now Pizzolatto reveals that he has a concept that could potentially become a reality in the future.

On the podcast “Nothing Left Unsaid,” the TV show creator and author had a conversation with hosts Tim and Troy Green. They delved into a career review, discussing the writer’s achievements that include credits in “The Killing.” Pizzolatto discussed his writing journey, leading up to his most significant undertaking yet – “True Detective.”

Despite his departure from the show, the writer remains immensely proud of the series and acknowledges that Season 1 is among the finest TV productions ever made. Asked about potential continuation of the characters’ stories, specifically those of Rust Cohle (played by McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Harrelson), Pizzolatto explains that it was initially conceived as an anthology series. He further notes that the overwhelming success of Season 1 brought about discussions among the cast about doing another season, with the suggestion being more about reuniting the talented actors than revisiting specific storylines. If a new season were to materialize, Pizzolatto has already devised an idea for resurrecting the beloved detectives.

“I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that — who knows? — maybe we’ll do it one day.

Once more, it seems to revolve around characters; however, this isn’t something I’ve penned myself. Instead, the ideas have been lingering in my mind. We’ve discussed reuniting and moving forward with it, and I believe the team is receptive. The question remains: will this idea ever come to fruition or not?

Debuting in 2014 with widespread praise, “True Detective” represented HBO’s innovative take on crime dramas, featuring two actors at the pinnacle of their careers (with McConaughey taking on a major role following his Academy Award win). This series was also recognized across various award platforms, securing nominations for both the Emmys and Golden Globes. Currently, Season 1 boasts a rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, and its storyline can be summarized as follows:

As a devoted fan, I find myself immersed in the narrative that centers around two seasoned homicide detectives – Martin Hart (Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (McConaughey). Together, they embark on a chilling journey to unravel the mystery of a ruthless serial killer with a penchant for ritualistic crimes. This elusive fiend first crossed their paths seventeen years ago, and now they’re compelled to revisit this old case, as well as several other unsolved enigmas.

Throughout this gripping tale, Hart grapples with the consequences of his infidelity on his marriage to Maggie (Monaghan), while Cohle wrestles with the demons of his troubled past. The lines between justice and personal turmoil blur as they delve deeper into the heart of darkness.

Nic Pizzolatto Addresses His Exit From ‘True Detective’ After Season 3

In the podcast discussion, Pizzolatto shared his reason for departing the show in 2019. Following Season 3, there was a lengthy hiatus until 2022 when Issa López assumed control of the franchise and premiered True Detective: Night Country. Although Season 4 reverted to the horror atmosphere similar to Season 1, Pizzolatto played no part in it. He feels his choice was appropriate as he needed some space from the “shadowy” aspects.

In late 2019, I decided it was time for me to move on from my contract. I felt that if I had provided them with a compelling script for another season of True Detective, they might have taken the opportunity. However, I found myself emotionally drained, having walked through so much darkness and dealing with heavy subject matter. Then, I was granted full custody of my daughter, which required me to focus more on being a parent in 2020, leading me to step away from many professional commitments.
