It’s no secret that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been experiencing some turbulence recently. With underwhelming Disney+ series and unsuccessful attempts to establish new franchises like Eternals, there seems to be a lack of forward motion. The brief excitement generated by Deadpool and Wolverine, featuring Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, didn’t quite fit into the larger narrative that the MCU is trying to weave. However, Captain America: Brave New World takes center stage by having Anthony Mackie’s Star Spangled Man face off against Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who transforms into the Red Hulk in this story.
In addition to its innovative elements, Brave New World carries significant consequences for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that extend beyond the film itself. Even after Brave New World fades from memory, certain scenes will continue to impact the MCU’s future.
1) Adamantium Finally Joins the Party
In the movie Eternals, when a colossal Cosmic entity emerges in the Indian Ocean, it’s quite an impressive event. Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) chooses to overlook this for a while until the story unfolds in Brave New World. It’s then revealed that various world governments are mining adamantium from this entity, a substance stronger than vibranium, making it potentially lethal if misused.
Sam Wilson successfully prevents a conflict from erupting around Celestial, establishing a pact that prohibits any nation from misusing adamantium. However, it seems this tranquility might not endure indefinitely, given the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s plans to involve Wolverine and his mutant companions with adamantium in future events.
2) Sam Wilson Is Restarting the Avengers
Ever since the tumultuous events of “Captain America: Civil War,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been without an official Avengers squad. Though Earth’s mightiest heroes reunite in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” their assembly is more of a necessity than a choice. As I look forward, leaving the past behind, I find myself eager to assemble a new team.
At first, Ross plants the notion in Sam’s mind about rethinking hero figures following his presidential victory. However, Sam is reluctant due to Ross’ questionable past. Interestingly, this hesitation proves beneficial as the politician transforms into a colossal red monster. Despite this unexpected twist, the idea remains sound, prompting Captain America to enlist Falcon and reactivate the Avengers.
Ross made Sam think differently about heroes after he won the presidency. But at first, Sam was unsure because of Ross’ past. However, it turned out for the best since Ross transformed into a big, red monster. Even with this surprise, the plan was still good, so Captain America asked Falcon to join and restarted the Avengers.
3) The Door Is Open for the New Avengers
Unaware of it, Ross inadvertently facilitates the assembly of a team of heroes. In “Thunderbolts”, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine seizes an opportunity following the president’s destruction of Washington, DC, and advances her Sentry project. With no other test subjects remaining alive, Bob puts on a golden suit and appears poised to become the Earth’s latest protector.
*Note: “Thunderbolts” is the name of a fictional comic book team in Marvel Universe.
Sadly, it’s Bob’s alternate identity, ‘The Void’, who triggers a huge disaster in New York, necessitating the intervention of the Thunderbolts. Once the city is secure, the team shifts their focus towards Valentina, who manages to escape danger by publicly revealing her creation of the “New Avengers” to the media.
4) The Leader Changes Past Events in the MCU
In the novel Brave New World, it’s Samuel Sterns, also known as the Leader, who emerges as the primary antagonist. Growing weary of being Ross’s idea-generator without recognition, he covertly transforms Ross into the Red Hulk, thereby threatening the president’s peace treaty. Captain America eventually thwarts his plans, but the harm inflicted prior to that is irreversible.
It’s been known that Sterns has been offering guidance to Ross ever since the conclusion of “The Incredible Hulk”. Apart from his significant appearance in “Civil War”, where he backed the Sokovia Accords, if Sterns proposed the idea to Ross, it was actually him who orchestrated the movie, not Zemo.
5) The Raft Is More Important Than Ever
Once the battles have ended, Captain America confines both Ross and Sterns to the Raft, a penal institution smack-dab in the middle of the sea. Given its location, escaping is next to impossible. However, it’s worth noting that only one person – Steve Rogers – has successfully managed to breach its walls, both entering and leaving.
Gathering Zemo, Ross, and Sterns together means that The Raft is likely to make a significant comeback at some point in the future. Although it might be a while, as the Avengers are currently preoccupied with Doctor Doom, there’s a chance for a roster of villains within the prison cells.
