Valerie Mahaffey, known for her roles in ‘The Doctors’, ‘Northern Exposure‘, and ‘Young Sheldon’, passed away at the age of 71 on May 30, in Los Angeles following a battle with cancer. This was confirmed by her husband and fellow actor, Joseph Kell (of ‘Port Charles’ and ‘Relativity’). Mahaffey was not only a prominent figure in Hollywood, but her versatility in acting allowed her to amass an impressively diverse resume throughout her nearly 50-year career, working extensively in television, film, and theater. In a statement to ‘Variety’, Kell shared: “Valerie was not just a talented actress, but a true treasure in our industry.
My heart’s deepest companion is gone, and a cherished actress from America is no longer with us. She will surely be greatly missed.”
“The love that was the core of my world has vanished, and an admired American actress has left us all. There’s no denying she will be deeply mourned.
Mahaffey first graced the Broadway stage in the musical “Rex,” directed by Edwin Sherin, from April to June 1976 at New York City’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. In this production, she played Catherine Howard and was a part of the ensemble, while also standing as an understudy for Queen Claude of France, played by Martha Danielle. The grandiose show also starred legendary actress Glenn Close as Princess Mary.
The following year after his initial television appearance in the TV movie “Tell Me My Name” (1977), Mahaffey made an entrance into the medical drama series The Doctors, joining as Ashley Bennett in 1979. Over a hundred episodes of the show featured her performance, and she even received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Bennett. However, it wasn’t until twelve years later that Mahaffey finally claimed her first and only Emmy win.
Valerie Mahaffey Even Guest Starred on the “Show About Nothing”
Following a productive and short tenure on ‘The Doctors’, Valerie Mahaffey built an extraordinary career in television, film, and stage performances. Notably, she stepped into the role of Lucy Seward in ‘Dracula’ as a substitute. Subsequently, this versatile actress graced Broadway stages with roles in ‘Fearless Frank’ (1980), ‘Scenes and Revelations’ (1981), ‘Play Memory’ (1984), and ‘The Loves of Anatol’ (1985). Additionally, Mahaffey continued to make a mark on television with appearances on popular shows such as ‘Newhart’, ‘Cheers’, ‘Quantum Leap’, and eventually, the cherished “show about nothing”.
In the third season of Seinfeld, Mahaffey’s character Patrice, who sported chopsticks in her hair, was dating George Costanza (played by Jason Alexander). The episode titled “The Truth” saw Jerry needing Patrice’s assistance with his tax issues, only for George to call it quits under the familiar excuse of “it’s not you, it’s me,” causing a disruption. Mahaffey delivered an outstanding performance in this episode, but it was another series she started working on in 1991 that eventually earned her a single Primetime Emmy Award.
In the third to fifth seasons of the series “Northern Exposure,” Mahaffy portrayed Eve, the reformed Christian Scientist wife of Adam Arkin’s character. Her performance left a lasting impression, earning her an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1992. Since then, she has been featured in numerous productions on stage, TV, and film, including notable roles in “Wings,” “ER,” “Boston Legal,” Adam Sandler’s “Jack and Jill,” and even “Hannah Montana.” However, Mahaffy is particularly cherished by fans for her exceptional portrayal of English teacher Vicky MacElroy in the show “Young Sheldon.”
After the conclusion of “Young Sheldon”, Valerie Mahaffey made appearances on shows like “Big Sky”, “Dead to Me”, and Apple TV+’s “Echo 3”. In the year 2021, she was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award due to her performance as Mme. Reynard in the dark comedy “French Exit”. Regrettably, following almost half a century in show business, one of its cherished figures has passed away. Farewell, Valerie Mahaffey.
