An Underrated Animated Series Is Coming Back (And You’ll Never Guess How)

A popular ’90s cartoon show, “Toxic Crusaders,” is making a comeback, but this time not in an animated format. Known for its message of environmentalism and anti-pollution, the show gained a dedicated fanbase despite only airing for one season. Originally inspired by the “Toxic Avenger” films, it centered around Toxie and his band of mutated sidekicks. With Peter Dinklage set to star in a new “Toxic Avenger” film later this year, there couldn’t be a better moment for “Toxic Crusaders” to resurface too. Instead of another animated series, it will take the form of a comic book series.

In September, the five-issue limited series titled “Toxic Crusaders” will hit the stands. This comic book series is published by AHOY Comics and written by Matt Bors, a renowned creator who has been nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize and founded THE NIB. Illustrations are done by Tristan Wright. Notably, Bors is also working on a “Toxic Avenger” series for AHOY. The storyline of “Toxic Crusaders” centers around the Toxic Avenger from Troma Entertainment, as well as his mutant companions No-Zone, Junkyard, Major Disaster, and a brand new character named Fungirl.

Following the incident involving the chemical spill that led to the emergence of Toxie, more mutants surfaced. These new beings have joined forces to fight against a hidden alien plot, as stated by writer Matt Bors. We’re drawing heavily from the classic Toxic Crusaders animated series, with its grotesque mutations, scheming aliens, and outrageous eco-friendly adventures, aiming to create an unmissable monthly comic book experience for readers.

I’m super excited to share that a video game based on the Toxic Crusaders is in development, hitting shelves over Labor Day Weekend! The series artist Tristan Wright has crafted an amazing main cover for it. Plus, there will be an exclusive trading card variant, a cover by AR Sullivan, and a special Retroware game art variant cover by Xander Arnot. On September 10th, the Toxic Crusaders will storm into stores, following closely on the heels of the brand-new Toxic Avenger movie featuring Peter Dinklage!



Xander Arnot, a comic book artist known for his ’90s vibe, said, “Check out the movie, read the comics, play the game. It feels like the ’90s are still here!” He also mentioned that this could be the perfect moment to appreciate The Toxic Avenger and his vibrant group of super-powered Crusaders once again!

AHOY Comics is arranging a Toxic Mess Summer after the publication of The Toxic Avenger trade paperback in April and the release of the Toxic Avenger Pinup Special in May. A miniseries called Toxie Team-Up debuts in June, where Toxie interacts with characters from other AHOY comics. This is followed by the first issue of a new ongoing series, The Toxic Avenger Comics, in July. All these events lead to the release of the Toxic Crusaders video game from Retroware in August, the cinematic release of The Toxic Avenger movie starring Peter Dinklage as Toxie on Labor Day weekend, and the launch of the Toxic Crusaders comic in September.
