The game Splatoon recently marked its tenth anniversary, having initially debuted on the Wii U console in May 2015. After the first release, Nintendo introduced two more games in the series for the Switch platform. Given the excitement surrounding the franchise, fans are eagerly awaiting updates about what’s coming next. It’s widely anticipated that a new Splatoon game will be launched on the rumored Nintendo Switch 2, but as of now, no official announcement has been made. However, speculation among fans is rife, with some predicting an announcement may be forthcoming soon. The general sentiment among fans is one of eagerness for any news, and they are interpreting Nintendo’s recent social media celebrations as a sign that the developers are working on something fresh.
To celebrate the 10-year milestone of Splatoon, Nintendo unveiled a commemorative piece of art on their social media platforms showcasing several beloved characters that have graced our screens throughout the three games. This artwork features fan favorites such as Callie and Marie, along with more recent additions like Acht. In keeping with Splatoon’s social media style, which is narrated from the perspective of the Squid Research Lab, this anniversary post also follows suit. The accompanying text hints that the lab will persist in its investigations, concentrating on understanding the ecosystem of the Inklings.
Fans are viewing the Lab’s hint that Inkling research continues as potential indication of a new game in development, although it’s not a certainty. With the series having sold over 30 million copies across three games, and with little new content being added to Splatoon 3 since last year’s Grand Festival Splatfest, fans are eagerly anticipating a fourth installment, even if an official announcement hasn’t been made yet. They’re hoping for news of a sequel on the Nintendo Switch 2.
It’s important to point out that “Splatoon 2” was among the first games to debut on the original Nintendo Switch, hitting shelves in the summer of 2017. The game capitalized on the success of its predecessor and possibly fueled a great deal of curiosity towards the new Nintendo system, particularly in Japan where the franchise enjoys significant popularity. With numerous first-party games already slated for the Nintendo Switch 2, it appears unlikely that “Splatoon 4” will be released before the end of 2025. However, there’s a chance that development plans might be in motion for a 2026 launch.
As an enthusiastic fan, I’m excitedly anticipating some big announcements from Nintendo over the coming weeks! Nintendo has confirmed their participation at Summer Game Fest this year, and there are whispers that a Nintendo Direct livestream is set for early June. Fingers crossed they have something in store for Splatoon fans, but only time will tell.
