RoadCraft Explained: Your Complete Guide to Building Roads

In the creation of “Roadcraft”, the makers of “SnowRunner” have blended the physics-based driving mechanics from their game with design aspects found in building simulators. This results in a distinctive title where players must employ various vehicles and construction equipment for tasks ranging from clearing obstacles to rebuilding roads and installing cables. The core focus of this game is road construction, which involves several stages: resource gathering, transportation logistics, route mapping, and actual road construction.

Although an extensive guide is built into the game that provides detailed instructions, the intricacies of road construction might not be fully apparent. This comprehensive “RoadCraft” manual offers insights into the game’s mechanics that are crucial for understanding these complex aspects.

Scout Vehicle Selection

The Scout is an essential vehicle, known for its scanning and towing abilities. You have seven options, but only two are accessible at the start. Among these first two Scouts, I’d recommend the Armiger Thunder IV for its superior mobility and compact wheelbase. As you progress, aim to acquire the Tuz 119 “Lynx,” which can be obtained during the Deluge campaign at approximately 25,000 units. The winch feature will prove useful as you remove obstacles to create paths, and it assists in scanning terrain and objects.

Field Recovery Vehicles

These vehicles act as starting points for additional utility vehicles you may need in specific locations. This can be very useful when multiple pieces of equipment are needed at once, such as during a road construction project. Just drive one of these vehicles to your work site, and you can summon all task-related vehicles there by spending Recovery Tokens. The free KHAN Lo “Strannik” Field Service Vehicle is suitable for this purpose and comes with a winch for manual towing as an added bonus.

Equipment Transporters

If you don’t have fuel tokens, vehicle haulers such as the Zikz 605E Heavy Equipment Transporter or the Step 39331 “Pike” Light Equipment Transporter can be used to transport multiple vehicles to a worksite manually. The Zikz 605E will be an ideal choice at a price of 25,000 and will serve you effectively throughout the campaign. However, the Step 39331 “Pike” can perform similarly well because it can use its flatbed and winch to transport two vehicles simultaneously. The real limiting factor is its maximum tonnage capacity.

Crane Trucks

A significant portion of gameplay revolves around using a crane to gather items from the ground and put them onto a flatbed truck for transport. Though you’ll have two different vehicles to get this done, it can be quite laborious, especially if you’re playing alone. That’s where the Mule T1 Cargo Crane Truck proves invaluable at just 27,000 dollars. It will greatly reduce time and effort across numerous game instances during the campaign. As your vehicles upgrade over time, the older ones won’t be as useful, but you can keep them stationary at your various facilities to function as on-site loaders instead.

In a pinch, Crane Trucks can serve as a winch vehicle for any situation that may arise.

Road Construction

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that my AI-controlled convoys often get stuck on minor obstacles while navigating dirt paths. That’s where building good roads comes into play! Let’s scout for a sand quarry and start using my Dump Truck to lay down some pathway along the route, smoothing out any bumps or obstacles that could slow down my convoys.

Afterward, utilize your Dozer set or preferably, your Roller, to smooth out the sand by making several passes. Aim for at least two passes, but feel free to do more if necessary. Be particularly cautious during your second and subsequent passes, paying close attention for any audible cues while moving across the area. The sound will change when you’re traveling over even ground compared to areas that are still slightly uneven.

To achieve a precise result at both ends, first go through the middle from one end to the other, then repeat the journey in reverse. Next, make a trip along each side to ensure the sand is distributed evenly. Lastly, take one more pass down the center for a final touch-up.

Asphalt Paving

In most instances, it’s not essential to use asphalt paving. This is true unless specific tasks demand it. But, should you decide to pave every road on your property, there are crucial steps to follow.

To avoid the paving machines catching on hidden objects, make sure the sand is meticulously smoothed out. An unconventional yet effective solution could be to operate the paver in reverse, even though it’s usually driven forward for asphalt deposition and flattening. This might seem unusual due to the standard process of asphalt being laid from the front and smoothed by the back, but this method is acceptable in the game.

A more effective approach would be to lift the Paver using a movable Crane, then guide it slowly above the intended path. Subsequently, move the Crane along the same path instead. This method is notably quicker and helps to prevent any potential physics-related issues.

After that, roll out the Leveler following the same method we use for sand: pass it over the center in both directions first, then move to each side once, and finally, run it over the center again.

Leveling Uneven Roads

Neglecting to evenly compact sand prior to laying asphalt may result in noticeable lumps on roads. Fortunately, you can correct this issue without needing to engage your Dozer’s Asphalt Destruction grader. Instead, utilize your Roller by making several passes over the bump, and it should gradually smooth out over time.

Plotting Routes For AI Convoys

When designing routes for your autonomous vehicles, make sure to place them on one side of the road instead of in the middle. This helps prevent head-on collisions between self-driving vehicles moving in opposite directions, as their navigation may not always be precise. Additionally, aim to reduce the number of waypoints when possible as this is seen as a change in direction. Although the vehicles won’t do a complete U-turn, they could malfunction and end up in potentially dangerous areas.

Make certain to erase the routes after achieving the associated goals and gathering all the rewards, so as to keep your infrastructure layout organized and neat.

That is everything you need to know about constructing proper roads in RoadCraft.
