EA’s Black Panther Cancelled Due to Long Pre-Production Phase – Rumor

Recently, Electronic Arts has canceled the game Black Panther and shut down Cliffhanger Games. This is part of their strategy to concentrate on major titles such as The Sims and Apex Legends. Yet, Electronic Arts’ collaboration with Marvel remains active, which adds an element of mystery to why they chose to halt Black Panther’s development.

According to reports from Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, who spoke with people involved in the project, it appears that the video game in question is still in its early stages of development, having begun around four years ago. This has reportedly caused some dissatisfaction among leadership, as even though “Black Panther” surpassed a significant checkpoint known internally at EA as “a development milestone where executives assess a game’s progress and decide whether to proceed with production,” this project has yet to reach that stage.

Established in 2021, Cliffhanger faced difficulties while simultaneously growing the studio and developing its title. An extended conceptualization phase, coupled with high wages due to Kirkland, Washington’s location, added to the challenge. The team is said to have started expanding more recently (with layoffs lasting only a brief period), focusing on creating a vertical slice.

Even though Electronic Arts (EA) has not yet finished its work on Marvel-themed games, progress on the Iron Man project by Motive Studios is ongoing. Keep an eye out for further developments in the meantime.
