Katie Thurston Shares She’s Losing Her Memory Amid Cancer Battle

Katie Thurston is sharing her truth.

Approximately four months following the announcement by a former contestant on “The Bachelorette” that she had been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer (now advanced to stage four), she shared some of the challenging symptoms she’s been facing.

Katie stated on her June 1 Instagram post that she’s having memory issues. She recounted an incident at customs where she couldn’t recall the location she had just come from, saying, “I’m not sure… I can’t remember.

At a different time, the 34-year-old, who recently married Jeff Arcuri, shared that she had a minor dispute with her spouse, but she couldn’t quite remember what sparked their arguments.

As we were discussing, I exclaimed, “This feels eerily familiar to me,” I told Jeff. He inquired, “Familiar where?” To which I responded, “Somewhere, I just have this feeling that it’s happened before!

She went on to say, “We can find humor in it now,” she added. “Cancer is awful. At times, I tell myself, ‘Don’t wallow in self-pity.’ On other occasions, I remind myself, ‘It’s okay to feel sorry for yourself. Cancer is truly miserable.’

Apart from experiencing a significant increase in hair fall recently, the reality TV personality also disclosed that her hair loss is unusually excessive. Following a two-month course of medication, she’s now taking charge of crucial choices regarding her liver treatment.

Katie recently completed her second month of treatment and when asked about its duration, she stated that, in essence, it’s an ongoing process for the foreseeable future. She has chosen to continue with Histotripsy, a non-invasive liver tumor treatment offered at New York University. Katie remains hopeful about future medical advancements. Here’s to progress, keeping her fingers crossed as a symbol of determination, being a stage 4 patient.

She also mentioned it’s National Cancer Survivors Day. To her, each day she manages to live is a testament of survival. So in essence, she considers herself a survivor. Bravo for her!

Following her disclosure of having undergone medically-induced menopause last month, Katie further explained that the prescribed hormone-suppressing medication failed to function effectively. Should a change in medications not yield positive results, she confided that she might be forced to consider surgical removal of her ovaries as an alternative course of action.

She conceded that it wasn’t perfect, but she enjoyed the holiday. Now, back in New York City, she’s persistently striving to live her best life, despite being a cancer patient.

Initially, Katie Thurston became worried when she found a tiny bump on her breast during the summer of 2024.

She had initially thought it might be related to her period or muscle soreness from working out. However, because she had previously had a non-cancerous cyst removed from the same breast at age 20, she assumed this new lump was just another instance of the same thing. Yet, when it persisted and didn’t disappear, she decided to consult a doctor.

“I went to the doctor assuming it would be nothing,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories in February 2025. “But I was mistaken.

Initially, Katie’s general practitioner advised her to consult a specialist for a breast ultrasound due to concerns. Subsequently, she underwent a mammogram. Later, she revealed in an Instagram video posted on March 18, 2025, that the specialists suggested a biopsy to confirm whether it was breast cancer. She mentioned that her appointment was on February 5, and by February 13th, she received the official confirmation of a breast cancer diagnosis.

The first instance when she heard this news was particularly distressing for her. In an interview with Good Morning America on March 19, 2025, she shared that it was “the most terrible feeling I’ve ever experienced.” She added that, despite having no family history of breast cancer, the diagnosis came as a shock to her at the age of 34.

On February 15, 2025, Katie announced her stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis on Instagram. Over the following two weeks, she experienced a variety of emotions such as despair, anger, sadness, denial, and eventually strength and readiness. She shed tears often during this time.

In an effort to help others facing similar situations, Katie expressed her intention to document her journey. She explained that when she searched for stories like hers, she found comfort in the experiences of other young women battling breast cancer, and she aims to offer the same support to others by sharing her own experience. This initial step of accepting her reality was the hardest for her, but she is ready to fight against breast cancer.

Five months following her engagement to comedian Jeff Arcuri in the spring of 2024, Katie received her diagnosis. Originally, they had anticipated wedding planning and trying for a baby. Instead, their focus shifted towards treatment and recovery during that year. Consequently, Katie and Jeff chose to freeze their embryos as a precaution, considering potential impacts on her fertility from cancer treatments. They chronicled this journey in mid-March 2025 and provided updates at the end of that month on social media.

In an Instagram post on March 31, 2025, Katie shared the results of their embryo freezing process. A total of 17 eggs were retrieved, six of which were fertilized successfully. However, only three reached the blastocyst stage. After genetic testing, two viable embryos – one Grade B and one Grade C – were frozen. This is a common reality in In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) procedures.

Katie has also expressed her willingness to use a surrogate in the future if necessary. She highlighted the importance of their health, emphasizing that when the time comes, surrogacy might be the optimal choice for them. Lastly, she encouraged people not to judge celebrities who opt for surrogacy, as one never knows the personal struggles they may be facing.

Despite these challenges, Katie and Jeff have expressed contentment with the possibility of remaining a childless couple.

Katie and I, Jeff, made our union official by exchanging vows on March 22, 2025, in New York City. After many months of long-distance dating, I moved across the country to be with her. We decided to have a small ceremony in the backyard of our apartment, with our parents, an officiant friend, and our newly adopted dog Charlie present.

In an interview with Us Weekly, Katie shared that our decision to get married was emotional, given my ongoing chemotherapy treatments and the uncertainty surrounding my health. One night, Jeff surprised me by proposing on the spot, saying he wanted to show me his love and commitment. He promised to stand by me through sickness and in health.

Although we plan to have a larger wedding in the future, Katie mentioned that Jeff’s impromptu proposal was a powerful demonstration of his love and dedication. For my part, I wanted to take our relationship to the next level and be able to accompany her during her treatments in the hospital. I also wanted to have the legal rights and privileges that come with being married, such as being able to visit her in the hospital and make medical decisions on her behalf if needed. Just days after their beautiful wedding, my beloved idol revealed some shocking news in an Instagram video posted March 28, 2025. She shared that a PET scan had detected ‘some spots’ on her liver, and that her cancer had progressed to stage 4. But as she bravely put it, ‘Stage 4 can be terrifying, I won’t deny it. However, being triple-positive and with the liver spots detected early, I am incredibly hopeful about my prognosis.’

Following her Stage 4 diagnosis, Katie shared an update on the course of treatment she was considering. She explained that the cancer in her liver originated from her breast cancer, so essentially, her breast cancer was the primary concern and would be addressed first. Her initial plan involved six rounds of chemotherapy to kick things off.

However, just before Katie was due to start this treatment, she received some unexpected news. She wrote on Instagram that she had prepared for the chemo session scheduled for April 4, 2025, but her pathology results from the liver, breast, and lymph nodes all came back as HER2 Negative, despite initial tests at Kaiser showing positive results (HER2+). This change in diagnosis occurred mere minutes before she was to take a steroid for chemotherapy preparation. Instead of starting chemo, she went to meet her doctor to discuss the test results, additional testing needed, and implications for her revised treatment plan.

Consequently, Katie mentioned that “it seems like chemotherapy is no longer an option.” Although she should be happy about this development, she has received three updated diagnoses in just two months, which left her feeling uncertain. She emphasized the importance of thorough testing and seeking a second medical opinion during her cancer journey.

In her ongoing battle against cancer, Katie chooses to take things one day at a time. On March 31, 2025, she wrote on her Boobie Broadcast channel, “Sometimes I wonder ‘what’s the point of all this?’ But no matter how I feel, this is my reality, and I must make the most of it. It’s easier said than done to live like you’re dying, but now that I am, I understand the sentiment. We’re all moving closer to death every day, not in a gloomy way, but as an unavoidable part of life. So whether or not I have cancer, I consider myself fortunate for today. There are days when I feel sad, but I want to make the most of my time, with or without cancer.”

She also shares a valuable message with her followers. On Good Morning America, she said, “Don’t delay. Take action. Get yourself checked out.” This could be beneficial for your future self.
