After the shocking regeneration of Ncuti Gatwa‘s character at the close of The Reality War, the actor from Doctor Who has stated that his intention was merely to appear in two seasons all along.
In a candid YouTube interview, I shared my thoughts on our show’s planned number of seasons. Given the intense physical, emotional, and mental toll this role takes, it was only fitting we set a limit to ensure I could deliver my best performance throughout.
The performers portraying the Doctor are simply actors, regrettably we’re just human beings. It’d be wonderful to have the vitality and youth to continue this role forever, but my knees remind me that it’s past time.
During his brief stint of only two years, two seasons, and 19 episodes, Gatwa’s portrayal marked one of the shortest runs among the contemporary cast members in the series.
While Christopher Eccleston only appeared in a single season and 13 episodes, each of his successors – David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker – have all been part of the series for at least three full seasons.

In the year 2024, during the process of filming the ongoing season and marketing the one that had just ended, Gatwa previously expressed his plan to stay for an extended period as The Doctor. He playfully added, “Don’t count on getting rid of me anytime soon.
In addition, Gatwa shared his thoughts during an episode of Doctor Who: Unveiled in The Reality War, expressing that towards the end of filming, he felt a sense of fulfillment, or in other words, he was content.
He remarked, “Once you’re cast, you can’t help but realize that at some point, I’ll need to pass the torch. Everything will eventually conclude, and it’s inevitable.
It seems as though I’ve been perpetually gearing up for that moment. It’s had a mix of sweet and bitter feelings, much like what I would expect for any Doctor.
Gazing upon the console prior to its regeneration brought forth a thought: ‘What an incredible artifact! This very console has stood the test of time for six decades, and I’ve been fortunate enough to share part of that journey with it. It’s nothing short of enchanting.’
Additionally, “You’ve worn me out, and now I feel exhausted. Moreover, I’m getting older and feel ready for a more peaceful phase in my life.
Gatwa’s regeneration brought about a significant turn of events, culminating in Billie Piper stepping out from the swirling energy cloud during the regeneration process.
However, it remains unclear if Piper is portraying the Sixteenth Doctor, resuming her character as Rose, or something entirely new. Time will tell us more about this mystery.
Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Disney+ outside of the UK.
