In a fresh and distinct departure from its precursor, the forthcoming game titled “Defying Fate” will present numerous changes. Besides recounting the occurrences of the initial “Vindictus“, this new title promises to introduce an innovative twist in the series’ battle mechanics.
Under Nexon’s leadership, the game titled Vindictus: Defying Fate is set to emulate the success of the well-regarded soulslike game First Berserker: Khazan. Similar to its sibling title from Nexon, Defying Fate plans to transform a larger live service game into a standalone product. Game Rant recently had a conversation with the game director Dongseok Oh, who shared further insights about how the game aims to reshape the IP, particularly through its core mechanics.
How Vindictus: Defying Fate Is Shaking Up The Series’ Combat
Towards Singleplayer, Away From Multiplayer
At first glance, Defying Fate may not seem to deviate significantly from its origins. The original Vindictus is an action-adventure with hack-and-slash combat, similar to games like First Berserker: Khazan and other Nexon productions. Initially, it looks as though Vindictus: Defying Fate will follow a similar fundamental approach – however, it’s important to note that the game is not yet available for open testing, and even the current Alpha build is subject to change. As such, many of its unique aspects may not be apparent to fans until a later stage, as various elements within the game are still being refined.
In the upcoming expansion for Vindictus, titled Defying Fate, I sense a strong emphasis shifting towards a more solo-centric experience rather than multiplayer. While Vindictus is typically an MMO, Defying Fate seems to be veering towards a single-player journey. When queried about the rationale behind this change in direction, Oh highlighted the significance of this shift and its potential influence on the game’s mechanics.
One approach for rephrasing: “Our primary aim is to intensify the player’s involvement in the game’s storyline. Incorporating multiplayer elements can sometimes interfere with effective storytelling. To address this issue, we prioritize a single-player structure, offering multiplayer options exclusively in specific side quests.
The second goal is to deliver a more concentrated combat experience and preserve balance in multiplayer scenarios. When numerous characters are performing dynamic moves concurrently, visibility may become compromised in multiplayer settings. Additionally, when one boss has to manage multiple players at the same time, it can disrupt the intended rhythm and quality of the fight. To prevent the unique characteristics of each character from getting lost, we decided on a single-player focus to emphasize each character’s special abilities individually.
Additionally, you should know that the initial version of “Vindictus” was primarily designed with a multiplayer focus, featuring elements like competition, trading, and balancing for party-based battles. In contrast, “Defying Fate” is steering towards a single-player experience, sacrificing these aspects to give players the freedom to play according to their preferred style. The shift away from the live-service model, a strength of Nexon demonstrated in games such as “The First Descendant”, appears to be advantageous for “Defying Fate”, enabling the development team to fine-tune the game’s balance, narrative, and pace more effectively.
Changes From Vindictus: Defying Fate’s Alpha

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice the striking similarities between the overhaul of Defying Fate’s combat system and the combat transformation in Nexon’s The First Berserker: Khazan. Yet, what truly piqued my interest was when Oh delved deeper into the intricate details of how the combat has evolved within Defying Fate. He shared insights about the particular combat and mechanic adjustments made to the game since its initial Alpha testing, shedding light on the ongoing refinement process that continues to shape this captivating title.
In terms of gameplay, we’ve incorporated a “Timing Rewards” system that boosts your offensive capabilities when you dodge or defend at the right moment. Additionally, for boss battles, we’ve included “Finishing Moves” to make them more exciting. Moreover, two new characters, Delia and Karok, have been introduced, each offering unique combat styles to the game.
The battle zones have experienced substantial transformations. In comparison to their initial state before the alpha version, they’ve undergone a complete overhaul, featuring brand-new designs and layouts. Additionally, you’ll encounter new elements such as interactive movement systems and traps embedded within the environment.
