James Cartwright commended ITV’s soap opera, Coronation Street, for skillfully addressing the challenging topic of conversion therapy – a distressing process where individuals from the LGBTQ+ community are subjected to forced changes in their sexual orientation.
As a devoted cinephile, I found myself deeply captivated by the complex character of Theo Silverton, portrayed masterfully by Gareth Pierce. Married to a seasoned builder and sharing our lives together, I was unexpectedly drawn towards Todd Grimshaw. However, my secret affection was unveiled by my beloved Danielle, leaving us in a predicament that required drastic action. Consequently, I made the heart-wrenching decision to leave our shared abode, seeking solace and space to navigate this intricate web of emotions.
In the past, Theo, along with his partner Danielle, has two teenagers at home. During a conversation about their religious background, Theo disclosed that years ago, his deeply-held Christian beliefs unfortunately led him through the distressing ordeal of conversion therapy.
I find it quite fascinating that Corrie might attempt that challenge. Honestly, I feel incredibly proud, grateful, and humbled to be part of this Street.

He continued, “I hadn’t realized ‘conversion therapy’ existed, to be honest. I thought it was more of an American concept. However, it turns out it’s a genuine practice, and it’s incredibly harmful.
Just as you can’t decide your hair color, eye color, or height, you don’t pick your sexuality either. It’s simply ludicrous to suggest otherwise.
Recently, Theo had an encounter with someone named Noah (Richard Winsor). He shared this information with Todd, revealing that Noah played a role in Theo’s change of beliefs through conversion therapy.
While Theo navigates personal issues stemming from his divorce, it remains to be seen if Noah might resurface as a problem for Theo again in the future.
As Theo grapples with openly accepting his identity as a gay man against the backdrop of painful past experiences, Cartwright appears to be thoroughly enjoying his time on the film set.
In the life of every Coronation Street actor, there comes a time when they find themselves at the Rovers Return Inn, a drink is placed before them, and beneath it rests a coaster bearing the images of Newton and Ridley – this is what the actor revealed.
Picking it up and taking a sip, you exclaim, ‘Here I am on Coronation Street!’, and it’s simply delightful, truly remarkable.
While playing the character Theo, he playfully commented: “Isn’t it great to sport a work vest and a hard hat, plus high-vis clothing? It’s like I’m part of the Village People, and I even get to kiss Todd!”.
