The Weeknd bit his tongue when it came to his thoughts on The Idol.
Two years following the airing of the HBO series, the artist known as “Save Your Tears” singer (whose real name is Abel Tesfaye) clarified his decision to withhold excessive personal insights during filming.
In conversation with The Guardian, I shared that I found myself labeled as ‘hard to work with,’ which was the reason behind my limited impact on the Sam Levinson series. Being tagged as ‘difficult’ in Hollywood is a real setback, as this label tends to multiply rapidly.
Given that “The Idol” marked Tesfaye’s initial major acting and executive producing role in Hollywood, he was determined to avoid causing any unnecessary friction.
“You’ve got to pay your dues,” he explained. “And boy, did I pay my dues.”
Without a doubt, “The Idol,” featuring Lily-Rose Depp in its cast, faced harsh scrutiny for its production issues just before its debut. Consequently, the show was met with unfavorable reviews by critics. Now that the project has wrapped up, Tesfaye acknowledged to The Guardian that the criticism leveled against the series was indeed justified.
He mused to the outlet, “It might have been excellent if it had a start, development, and conclusion instead of ending in the middle.
Following the event, The “Can’t Feel My Face” artist found that his first directorial venture, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” which was released in theaters a month ago, rekindled a sense of “joy” within the filmmaking process for him.
He stated that prior to filming, he underwent any necessary healing processes. Afterward, he felt the need to discard that past self, and he desired to express this transformation in a more visually striking manner.
Additionally, as Tesfaye takes on a role that mirrors his real persona within this latest movie, which boasts the talents of Barry Keoghan and Jenna Ortega, it provided therapeutic benefits beyond just acting.

He expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to capture his persona on 35mm film and set it alight, stating that many artists would relish this chance. This is because, as time passes, one no longer wants to be defined by what they began at the age of 19.
As he put it, “I got to say: cut! And that’s a wrap.”
