41-year-old actor Devin Harjes, famed for roles in Marvel’s Daredevil and DC’s Gotham, passed away on May 27, 2025, at a New York City hospital after a winter cancer diagnosis. Throughout his career, he proved to be a dependable and impactful performer, frequently tackling rough roles that left an indelible impression. Though he gained recognition from comic book fans for his superhero work, he was also lauded for his portrayal of boxer Jack Dempsey in HBO’s hit series Boardwalk Empire and for his recurring role in the supernatural drama Manifest.
The spokesperson for Harjes commented after his passing, “He was an artist of strong conviction who always gave his all in every role he took on. Off-stage, he was generous, kind, compassionate, deeply committed to his loved ones, skilled at riding horses, and had a unique ability to connect with all creatures.
Harjes, who hailed from Lubbock, Texas, nurtured an early love for the great outdoors and excelled as an equestrian in his youth. His passion eventually led him to pursue acting, which he studied during college before launching his stage career in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Later, he moved to New York City to advance his acting career, landing roles in off-Broadway plays before transitioning to television and film successfully. As per his obituary, Harjes was also a martial artist and would humorously claim that it was a safer pastime than horse riding. He leaves behind his parents, his sister and her spouse, as well as his nephews, nieces, and former wife.
Devin Harjes’ TV Career
Devin Harjes left a lasting impression in the realm of comic book series adaptations through his standout performance in the debut season of Netflix’s Daredevil. In the third episode, titled “Rabbit in a Snowstorm,” he embodied Oscar, a minor thug operating within Wilson Fisk’s criminal organization. The character was intimidated by a juror and subsequently cornered for brutal interrogation by an emerging Daredevil (Charlie Cox). This scene served as a gritty and pivotal moment in the hero’s journey, and Harjes’ portrayal of a terrified criminal caught in an uncontrollable violent situation added authenticity to its impact. In the DC series Gotham, he took on the role of Clyde, a criminal fence with a past of procuring stolen goods from a young Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova). In the Season 1 episode “Lovecraft,” Clyde betrayed Selina and Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) to an assassin, reflecting the casual corruption that characterizes the series’ depiction of Gotham.
In a departure from his roles in comic book adaptations, Jeremy Sisto played the historical figure Jack Dempsey, the world heavyweight boxing champion, in two episodes of the highly praised HBO drama “Boardwalk Empire”, which won multiple Emmys. His last screen appearance was a notable recurring role in the hit supernatural series “Manifest”, where the plot revolves around an airplane that miraculously appeared after being missing for years. In this show, Sisto’s character Pete Baylor became a pivotal figure, showcasing his talent for navigating intricate, narrative-driven stories. His dependability also made him a preferred character actor in shows such as “Orange is the New Black”, “Blue Bloods”, and “FBI”.
