Initially, there were rumors suggesting that critics wouldn’t receive Nintendo Switch 2 consoles prior to its June 5 release for reviews. However, Nintendo has officially confirmed that this is indeed the case. As stated by VGC, a representative from Nintendo explained that they are not distributing review units before launch in order to ensure both players and reviewers have identical experiences with the console.
On the big day of its debut, I’m super excited to learn that my favorite gaming console will receive a crucial software upgrade! Although the specific features being rolled out with this update are still under wraps, it’s been confirmed they were being fine-tuned right up until the moment we get our hands on the console. Can’t wait to discover what exciting new elements these updates will bring to my gaming experience!
Although Nintendo may not be troubled by the minimal media coverage about the Switch 2’s debut, focusing less on launch game reviews, third-party publishers and certain press outlets have shown some apprehension due to the demanding schedule of evaluating games for the new console amidst the upcoming Summer Game Fest weekend.
In May, an editor expressed their frustration to The Game Business, as they would need to divide their attention between their usual tasks and the Summer Game Fest, expressing confusion about how they could manage both.
Third-party developers have added their voices to this topic, stating they planned to introduce an extra treat around the console’s release date, something beyond just Mario Kart (World), which players might find appealing as an additional choice. The head of a PR department has also expressed concern that the absence of independent reviews could make our launch difficult, suggesting we may have been wiser to delay by a few weeks.
As a passionate fan myself, it’s no surprise that the anticipation for the Switch 2 has been off the charts! Just look at the incredible response we’ve seen from fellow enthusiasts. Back in April, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that an astounding 2 million fans had signed up for a chance to secure pre-orders of the console ahead of its release. In their latest financial report, Nintendo predicts a staggering 15 million sales of this console during its first year on the market. That’s a whole lot of joy and excitement waiting to be unleashed!
According to Furukawa, our forecast for Nintendo Switch 2 sales in the current fiscal year is 15 million units. This estimate is similar to the number of original Nintendo Switches sold during a 10-month span from its debut in March 2017 up until the end of December that same year.
For now, the upcoming release of the Switch 2 is being viewed by DFC Intelligence as the most significant console debut in gaming history. This bold assessment stems from the shift in the release date of Grand Theft Auto 6, initially planned for Fall 2025, to May 2026. The game was expected to boost hardware sales, but its delay to next year seems to give Nintendo an edge in dominating the console market in 2025 with the Switch 2.
