5 Things We Want to See From the Next PS5 State of Play

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement! Tomorrow, on June 4th, Sony’s got another PlayStation State of Play lined up. These events are where they shine the spotlight on a plethora of games, both first and third-party, destined for the PS5 and PlayStation VR2 in the coming months and years. With a confirmed State of Play scheduled for June 2025, it’s high time we started guessing what tantalizing treats they might unveil!

2025 appears to be a more subdued year for Sony, with only a few major releases on the horizon. “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” is due out this month and “Ghost of Yotei” in October, but the rest of the year’s first-party lineup seems rather sparse. This could pave the way for a fresh State of Play event, which we eagerly anticipate. Here are some elements we hope to see at this upcoming PlayStation-centric showcase.

1. We Finally Get a Gameplay Trailer for Ghost of Yotei

Although Ghost of Yotei seems to be Sony’s major exclusive title this year, we’ve only been presented with two largely cinematic trailers for the game so far. While snippets of gameplay are included in these, it’s high time we got a longer, unedited glimpse at some actual Ghost of Yotei gameplay. This upcoming State of Play would offer Sucker Punch Productions an ideal platform to demonstrate how Ghost of Yotei distinguishes itself from Ghost of Tsushima in more ways than just the storyline. This will undoubtedly heighten anticipation for this game before its release on October 6th.

2. Hopefully, There’s Another Surprise First-Party Game This Fall

At the moment, “Ghost of Yotei” stands alone as the only PlayStation 5 exclusive set to release in fall 2025. On the other hand, the multi-platform launch of “Marathon” in September seems uncertain. Given this situation, I’m hoping Sony has more plans for a second-half 2025 release to keep their fans satisfied. Although it seems improbable that a game like “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet” would make that release window, a smaller-scale indie game or remastered PS4 title could potentially take its place. For instance, “God of War,” which was released in 2018 for the PS4 and hasn’t received a PS5 remaster yet, serves as an example of such a game.

3. Saros Gameplay Needs to Be Revealed With a Release Date

During the last State of Play event, Housemarque unveiled a game called Saros, but all we got was a cinematic trailer and a broad 2026 release date. I’m eagerly waiting for more details about Saros during the next State of Play. Ideally, they would show us some gameplay footage for the first time. Additionally, it would be great if they provided a more precise release window for the game, maybe even in the early months of 2026 instead of later in the year. Until then, I plan to revisit some of Housemarque’s hidden treasures like Matterfall and Nex Machina.

4. We Need to Finally See More of Marvel’s Wolverine

It’s surprising that we haven’t gotten an official update on the Marvel’s Wolverine game since its announcement during the PlayStation Showcase in 2021, despite some leaked information from Insomniac Games in December 2023. I personally hope they share their vision for the game directly, rather than relying on leaks. It would be great to catch another glimpse of Marvel’s Wolverine, even if its release is still a year or more away, and to get a clearer sense of when we might expect it.

5. Sony Needs to Renew Confidence in its Live Service Games

As a gamer, I’ve got to be honest – Sony’s foray into live service games hasn’t exactly been a home run, with only a few exceptions like “Helldivers 2” shining brightly. If Sony isn’t planning to rewind and concentrate on their knack for creating stellar single-player games, they need to make it clear to us, the fans, why we should invest our time and passion in troubled projects like “Marathon” or “Fairgames”. A State of Play could be the perfect platform for them to do just that, even if it’s a behind-the-scenes look at development, rekindling our trust in these projects. Right now, I’m finding it hard to get excited about any of Sony’s live service games in the pipeline.

On June 4th, at 2 p.m. Pacific Time, we’ll be hosting our next State of Play event. According to Sony, this showcase is packed with exciting news and updates about upcoming games exclusively for the PS5.
