Film director Danny Boyle has unveiled his blueprint for a fresh trilogy, where Cillian Murphy will reprise his role in the first installment. Boyle expressed that he’ll be counting on Murphy’s collaboration to bring the third movie to fruition.
28 Years Later has been confirmed by director Danny Boyle, and it will be notable for its continuity of characters, with Spike (portrayed by Alfie Williams) playing a central role. Boyle hinted that Murphy’s character can be found in The Bone Temple. “I shouldn’t reveal too much,” he cautioned, “or I might end up in trouble.” The initial trailer for 28 Years Later ignited speculation about Murphy’s character being among the infected, but this theory was soon disproven. Boyle emphasized that the influence of the Oppenheimer star on the film (and the planned trilogy) extends far beyond this single aspect.
In other words, Boyle cleverly convinced Sony to allow him to film crucial scenes for “28 Years Later” by promising them the presence of Cillian Murphy. He acknowledged that this was a strategic move to divert attention from any technical worries, saying, “If you offer them Cillian Murphy, it’s quite an effective distraction.” In essence, they used this promise to their advantage. As Murphy is set to appear in “The Bone Temple”, Boyle anticipates the actor may also participate in producing its sequel.
Danny Boyle Wants Cillian Murphy To Produce 28 Years Later Sequel
As a diehard fan, I can only express my anticipation for Cillian’s involvement in the third installment of “28 Years Later”. He seems poised to help secure funding, which is crucial given that the film’s release is already scheduled for January 16, 2026. Interestingly, Spike will be the focal point of the story, and his journey will flow seamlessly through all three films. We shot the first two movies consecutively, not just for practical reasons like actor availability, but also because the stories are interconnected, making them literally one continuous narrative.
He went on to explain, “At the end of [28 Years Later], there’s a concluding part that isn’t just a coda, but rather an epilogue or final theme. This section serves as a transition to the next film. Although each story wraps up individually, it also includes a setup for the sequel. So it’s quite ambitious. We don’t have the funds for the third installment just yet… But if we perform well, they might approve both the finances and production for the third one. Everyone is eagerly waiting for that, even Cillian.
Boyle expressed his enthusiasm for directing the third movie, provided everything works out favorably. He stated, “Absolutely, I would be thrilled to do so, yes.” However, he added, “Assuming health and other conditions remain good, but it also depends on how the first film performs. You may not want me for the job in that case. Just keep in mind that circumstances can change unexpectedly.
28 Years Later hits theaters on June 20.
