’90s Street Sharks Return in Exciting New Comic Series After 20 Years

Are you prepared for things to become even more exciting? The ’90s were an intriguing era for children, filled with numerous cartoon shows and toys demanding your focus. One overlooked gem from the ’90s was the Street Sharks animated series, which starred the four Bolton brothers – half-shark, half-human superheroes and crime fighters. Alongside series like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Biker Mice From Mars, and Battletoads, Street Sharks was part of a group of mutated heroes who transitioned from animated series to toys and other platforms. After spending some time out of the spotlight, Street Sharks is back in a new comic book series.

Mattel and IDW Publishing have revealed that they’re launching a new Street Sharks comic book series, available in stores from September onwards. This five-issue run is penned by Stephanie Williams (Nubia and the Amazons) and illustrated by Ariel Medel (TMNT vs Street Fighter). It’s been more than two decades since a new release, but this fresh series is inspired by the original 1994 animated series. The comics will keep readers on the edge of their seats as the Sharks defend Fission City from various gene-mutated threats, such as powerful and terrifying lobsters and squids, sinister mad scientists who transform into deadly piranha monsters, and more. The comic promises to deliver all the excitement fans loved about the TV show, including the Sharks cruising cool motorcycles, devouring lots of burgers and metal while navigating through the city’s concrete jungle, and fighting against bad guys.

Marking over three decades since its debut, the animated series Street Sharks has gained a devoted following, leaving fans eager for more adventures featuring the crime-fighting quartet Ripster, Jab, Streex, and Big Slammu,” said Ryan Ferguson, Mattel’s Global Head of Publishing. “We are excited to carry on this franchise‘s legacy and delve further into its world by collaborating with IDW to produce new comic books that will expand the universe of Street Sharks.

Partnerships based on honesty, open communication, and adaptability, according to David Jonas, CEO of IDW Media Holdings. We’re happy that in the spirit of a beneficial partnership, IDW and Mattel have honed our efforts towards properties where IDW can excel – creatively and structurally – in their production, distribution, and ultimately, fan enjoyment of these legendary franchises.

Nicolas Niño, the series editor, expressed his enthusiasm about introducing a fresh audience to ‘Street Sharks’. He believes these characters perfectly encapsulate the ’90s extreme teen spirit, which makes them effortlessly adaptable to comic books. The upcoming series, crafted by Stephanie and Ariel, is a heartfelt tribute to the original animated show, making it a delight for both old-time fans and newcomers alike.

Lately, there’s been a resurgence in the popularity of cherished animated franchises. Last week, AHOY Comics unveiled plans for a new Toxic Crusaders series, while Tatsunoko Production and Mad Cave Studios are developing additional Speed Racer material, and Mad Cave is also providing fresh Gatchaman content for enthusiasts. Not to be outdone, IDW Publishing has reintroduced the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, this time with writer Jason Aaron and a talented team of artists.
