James Gunn, one of the co-heads at DC Studios, has given a distinctly humorous title to the main storyline for John Cena’s character Peacemaker.
“Gunn made this comment at the fan convention: ‘The Peacemaker series belongs to the Tighty Whities Trilogy.’ He was referring to ‘The Suicide Squad’, followed by Seasons 1 and 2. This statement humorously highlights the evolution of Christopher Smith’s character, from his movie debut up to his solo TV show. The ‘Tighty Whities’ reference is a wink to Peacemaker’s notorious and frequently mocked underwear choice, which became a recurring joke and emblematic of the character’s unique mix of deadly seriousness and utter silliness.”
Through labeling these three parts as a “trilogy,” Gunn underscores that they tell a unified story, showcasing Peacemaker’s transformation from an unyielding government agent into a character who grapples with internal conflicts, despite his continued flaws. Though The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1 are considered semi-canonical within the DC Universe, Gunn is committed to preserving Christopher’s development in this fresh universe.
Everything We Know About Peacemaker Season 2 in the New DCU
In the upcoming second season of “Peacemaker,” the story of Christopher Smith takes a major step forward, jumping ahead a few years following the chaotic incidents of the first season as confirmed by James Gunn. This time leap provides an opportunity for the world in the new DC Universe to respond to Leota Adebayo’s (Danielle Brooks) public revelation of Project Butterfly and Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) covert activities, events that are already causing ripples in other DCU projects such as the animated series “Creature Commandos.” Gunn has explained this flexible timeline as a strategic choice, drawing upon his Marvel experience, to avoid continuity problems and enable stories to grow more naturally.
Joining John Cena for Season 2 are the original 11th Street Kids: Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos. Nhut Le’s Judomaster is expected to return, but details about his character’s story following the defeat of the Butterflies are yet to be revealed. Robert Patrick will once again play Auggie Smith, Peacemaker’s late and abusive father, through a plotline involving pocket dimensions. This alternate reality introduces a different version of Peacemaker with a jetpack and an upside-down dove insignia, his brother Keith alive and armored, and a blue-armored alternate White Dragon.
In the second season of “Peacemaker,” the character of Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo, enters as a significant new adversary. He’s the father of Rick Flag Jr., whom Peacemaker killed in “The Suicide Squad.” Driven by personal revenge against Christopher Smith (Peacemaker), Flag Sr. takes over ARGUS in this season. The cast is also joined by Michael Rooker as Red St. Wild, a skilled eagle hunter who becomes a specific antagonist for Peacemaker’s loyal sidekick, Eagly.
Peacemaker Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, August 21st, on HBO Max.
