During the initial week of PRIDE Month 2025, Xbox stands out among other prominent video game industry players with a subtle yet significant action. Without making an announcement or posting specifically about it, Xbox subtly changed its profile pictures on X, Facebook, and Instagram to incorporate rainbow-themed designs, making it the sole major console manufacturer to publicly acknowledge PRIDE Month thus far.
Interestingly, the change in Xbox wasn’t tied to a larger initiative and lacked any accompanying written announcement.

In prior years, Xbox had been far more vocal in its recognition of PRIDE.
2023 found me thrilled to learn about a significant collaboration between Xbox Publishing and GLAAD. This partnership was all about empowering game developers to incorporate more narratives and characters that spotlight various identities in their creations.
Let’s make a more inclusive gaming community. 💚
During this month of celebrating Pride, we’re thrilled to share the news of Xbox Publishing’s collaboration with GLAAD. Together, they aim to empower LGBTQIA+ employees and supporters to increase representation within their game development. On June 1, 2023, a declaration was made that aimed for a “gaming community more welcoming to all.” This announcement was supported by related artwork and a link to an Xbox News article entitled “Celebrate with Pride,” which highlighted the topic.
This year, unlike past years, the company hasn’t shared a post promoting inclusivity or celebrating PRIDE on its social media platforms. Instead, it has continued with its usual marketing strategy. The only apparent acknowledgement of PRIDE is a profile picture change on their account. Strangely, Xbox’s Threads account still displays the standard logo without any modifications, implying either a deliberate exclusion or a delay in updating the image.

This action sets a distinct tone compared to the strategies of other significant console producers. By mid-June, neither Sony’s PlayStation nor Nintendo has issued any official statements in support of PRIDE Month. Instead, both companies have persisted with their usual promotional tactics, emphasizing their upcoming game launches.
Unlike other significant console producers, this action stands out as different. As of early June, neither Sony (PlayStation) nor Nintendo has publicly recognized PRIDE Month. Instead, they’ve kept their social media postings consistent, primarily sharing gaming-related content. PlayStation’s social media channels continue to disseminate standard promotional materials for their platforms and games, while Nintendo continues to focus on marketing efforts centered around the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

Neither company has updated profile imagery or branding to reflect the observance.
It’s worth noting that although Microsoft, known for its forward-thinking approach, hasn’t made any official statements or changes to its social media presence in celebration of PRIDE Month. Their social accounts continue to display typical corporate branding with no apparent content acknowledging this year’s observance.
Although Xbox is currently leading in making visible statements about this, it’s important to note that it’s not the only player in the gaming industry making subtle changes like these. Many studios have followed suit, with a noticeable trend among developers known for incorporating identity-centric themes in their games.

Among those are:
- Insomniac Games, the developer behind Marvel’s Spider-Man games all of which included prominent PRIDE flag imagery in the game worlds and PRIDE-centric storylines in Spider-Man 2.
- Gearbox Entertainment, creators of Borderlands, known for its highly stylized, character-driven storytelling.
- Guerrilla, the PlayStation studio responsible for the Horizon series.
Furthermore, I’m proud to share that my favorite exclusive Xbox game, Halo, has shown its support for the PRIDE community by teasing unique PRIDE-themed cosmetics within Halo Infinite.
This #PrideMonth, we celebrate love, diversity, and the freedom to be yourself 🏳️🌈
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t wait to log into Halo Infinite this month! The chance to acquire the Unity coating, visor, and emblem is something I simply can’t miss out on. Once I’ve unlocked these exclusive items, I’ll wear them with utmost pride, feeling like a true master of the galaxy.

In a departure from their past practices, corporations like Disney, Target, Starbucks, and Walmart seem to be adopting a more subtle approach in showing support for PRIDE, outside of the gaming world, as of early June. They haven’t issued any public statements, tied products to PRIDE, or made visible changes to their branding on their main social media platforms.
This year, there’s been significantly less involvement compared to past years, as numerous companies used to unveil themed products, social initiatives, and prominent posts timed for June 1st, which they would usually do.

It appears that large corporations are adopting a softer approach due to growing criticism from regular consumers, especially families who have raised issues about the abundance of content centered on identity during summer retail promotions targeted at kids. Companies that used to make PRIDE Month a key marketing focus may now be more cautious – particularly following high-profile disputes in 2023 and 2024 over product placements and ad partnerships.

Currently, Xbox is the only gaming console that has publicly shown any visual recognition, though it’s been done in a much more subdued way compared to past years. It’s uncertain if other companies will join this approach as we move through the month.
