Midsomer Murders Star Finds It Daunting to Replace John Nettles

For seven years, Daniel Casey, a trusted companion, stood beside John Nettles in the cherished ITV series Midsomer Murders. His role was that of the lively, somewhat disorganized partner, Sergeant Gavin Troy.

Previously, the student was a learner, but now, he’s ready to guide others as the actor takes on the part of DCI Tom Barnaby for the upcoming Midsomer Murders stage production titled “The Killings at Badger’s Drift.

He mentioned, “It seems fitting, there’s a hint of apprehension, and I can’t deny feeling a tad nervous.” But considering my current age is similar to John’s in the initial episode, it feels appropriate.

“I’m just very excited about stepping into his shoes – although they’re huge shoes to fill.”

Casey mentioned that securing the role of Barnaby brought about a great deal of nostalgia and caused him to reflect upon his past collaborations with Nettles. Reflecting back, he recalled: “I clearly remember my initial encounter with John during the rehearsal, and we clicked immediately – our chemistry was evident from the start.

He added: “Indeed, he mentioned in the media that I studied under a great teacher, and it’s correct. He was truly remarkable.

When asked if Casey might alter the character, given his earlier assurance that the stage show would closely follow the original, he replied: “I’ll add my personal touch to it, but it won’t stray too far from the norm because Barnaby is essentially a steady, enigmatic, and charming figure.

Despite being just a foot away from the person who performed it for seven years, I can’t help but recognize some resemblances. However, since it will be my interpretation, it will undoubtedly have its own unique twist.

As a movie enthusiast, I cannot stress enough that the essence of this character is meticulously crafted right on the pages of the novel, the lines of the screenplay, and the scripts for television. It’s almost impossible to stray too far from him because his solid presence, amidst the tumultuous chaos he encounters, is simply unshakable.

From seasons one through thirteen, Nettles portrayed the character of Tom Barnaby until 2011. After his departure, a younger relative, John Barnaby, took over the role, with Neil Dudgeon stepping into it.

While it’s true that Casey’s departure creates an open position for the new Sergeant Troy, Casey expresses great enthusiasm about this change.

It’s important that they feel completely at ease while playing Troy, so let the actor bring their unique interpretation to the role.

In my perspective, when I step into an audition room, I must harbor a fierce ambition for that role, making it clear I want it. Yet, once within the room, I switch gears, becoming more selfless, focusing on how I can complement their performance and bring out the best in them.

For now, the remaining actors for the Badger’s Drift tour haven’t been revealed, and we can’t wait to discover who will assume the role of the student after Casey’s promotion when the tour begins in October.
