In contrast to earlier versions, Mario Kart World boasts a more expansive environment for players to traverse. However, the developers behind this kart racing game prefer not to label it as an “open-world” title. In a conversation with GamesRadar, producer Kosuke Yabuki explained that the ambiguity surrounding the term “open-world game” made it unsuitable for describing Mario Kart World.
According to Yabuki, the team prefers not to refer to this game world as an “open world” because they believe that term isn’t precisely defined. However, it’s evident that there’s a vast environment for players to traverse, as they’ve included familiar locations such as the Mario Kart Circuit, Bowser Castle, and Choco Mountain within it, aiming to create a new Mario Kart experience.
Yabuki discussed the significant shift towards allowing players greater scope for exploration within the Mario Kart series. Reflecting on the entirety of the Mario Kart franchise, he acknowledged this as a substantial change. He further emphasized that while they aimed to bring about this transformation, the essence of enjoyment that is inherent in the Mario Kart series was not to be compromised.
In this version of “Mario Kart”, every path is linked together, so modifying one route to make it smoother for traversal affects all the other paths as well,” Yabuki explained. “That’s why we knew they were all connected and had to be careful to maintain harmony across the entire design.
In addition, Yabuki disclosed that the team behind the game had pondered over the possibility of eliminating well-known features from the game “Mario Kart World”, such as the banana peel and the green shell. As they constructed this world anew, they reconsidered all the components within this game, including the classic banana skin. They even questioned whether it was still relevant to incorporate this item in “Mario Kart World”.
In the Mario Kart World, the possibility of taking out the green shell arose due to the game’s innovative mobility features, which offer players increased opportunities to dodge getting hit by the shell. Yabuki pointed out that the studio had also thought about equipping the green shell with similar maneuverability options, such as the ability to glide over rails.
He added another example: the green shell. While it’s been a part of ‘Mario Kart’ for some time now, the question arose as to whether its function is adequate since it can only be tossed across the track. For instance, characters like Mario can ride over the barriers. So, why not make the shell capable of sliding over them too?
The game titled Mario Kart World is planned to debut together with the Nintendo Switch 2, making it one of the console’s launch games. This upcoming title promises an expansive open world where multiple roads and routes interconnect to provide over 100 tracks, as revealed by Yabuki.
