Actors Rory McCann and Jack Lowden recently shared some behind-the-scenes details about their upcoming period action drama, “Tornado,” in an exclusive chat with ComicBook. Penned and directed by John Maclean, the movie revolves around a woman named Tornado (Kōki) who escapes from a vicious gang of highwaymen led by Sugarman (Tim Roth). McCann, famous for his captivating role as The Hound in “Game of Thrones,” and Lowden, praised for his diverse acting skills, spoke about their work on the film, recounting stories involving co-star Roth, their character interpretations, and the distinctive environment of the set. Their reflections portray a tough yet fulfilling filming experience for this visually captivating heist movie.
McCann expressed his joy about teaming up with Tim Roth for a project. He found it thoroughly enjoyable and even more so because Roth was so talkative and eager to share tales while they waited for camera adjustments or for a storm to clear up. They were in a small tent, and all of a sudden, Roth began talking about his experiences working with Quentin Tarantino. The rest of them responded with enthusiasm, encouraging him to share more stories and revealing details about other challenging personalities. McCann also reminisced about not getting the chance to work with Joanne Whalley-Kilmer, as she was the first actor he ever saw acting, on the set of Willow in 1987.
Lowden mentioned that he wasn’t present during the Tarantino event, but shared his fondness for Roth as he had numerous stories about him. He admitted he might have attempted to act nonchalant and didn’t ask him much, but the one question he did pose was about Roth’s film “To Kill a King” where he played Oliver Cromwell. Lowden found Roth exceptional in this movie, and thus, inquired about it.
Jack Lowden Plays Tim Roth’s Son in Tornado
Speaking about the initial process, Lowden highlighted Roth’s significant contribution to the creation of “Tornado”. He humorously commented on Roth’s habit of hitting him before takes, which is generally discouraged, but then clarified. “Actually, we didn’t rehearse at all,” he said. “We had no time. It happened quite quickly. The fact that Tim is as talented as he is usually handles such situations. John is a director who is skilled at trusting his actors and stepping back to let them work. If he sees something subpar or has suggestions for improvement, he’ll speak up, but ultimately, he trusts you. I, in turn, trust Tim Roth completely. It was an amazing experience.
Lowden explained that the use of ‘Little’ before Sugar’s name in the character he played, reveals a lot about him. Additionally, when the director asked a 6’1″ actor like Lowden to portray a ‘little’ character, it added depth to his appreciation for the role. Furthermore, Lowden mentioned that every time Roth’s character was referred to as Sugar Man, the song ‘Sinner Man’ kept popping into his mind, which he found fitting given its association with Little John, a character he admires.
In Lowden’s portrayal, Little Sugar is depicted as someone who has resorted to violence as a solution throughout his life, following in his father’s footsteps and mirroring their surroundings. However, he doesn’t necessarily believe that there’s an inherent wickedness within him. Rather, Lowden suggests that he detests the existence of a gang, and often feels neglected by his father. In a different environment, Lowden believes that Little Sugar might have turned out differently, but what truly drives both him and his father is greed.
As a cinema enthusiast, I found myself deeply captivated by the visual storytelling in this film. John, the director, was unequivocal about his vision – he wanted to create an homage to cinema, and he did so through stunning, vivid imagery. He even suggested that much of the film would feature me, merely leaning against trees. I enthusiastically agreed, understanding that his creative direction was key to the film’s success.
McCann’s Tornado Role and Moving On From Westeros
In his reflections, McCann noted that he frequently finds himself in roles that are either historically significant or physically imposing. He suggested this might be due to his tall stature, which makes it challenging for two-shot scenes, often leading to him playing larger-than-life characters. When asked about the stark contrast between his role as The Hound in Game of Thrones and a character named Kitten in Tornado, McCann admitted he hadn’t given it much thought. He humorously joked that he might have forgotten why he was given the nickname Kitten, possibly because the cast spent a lot of time socializing at a pub during filming, which may have affected his memory.
McCann expressed his enjoyable experience on “Game of Thrones,” noting that he was part of it for nine years, starting from the pilot episode. He admitted it was time to leave, but looked back fondly on the good times. He mentioned that no one should stay on a job for more than nine years, so he’s eagerly anticipating his next project. After “Tornado,” McCann will make his appearance in Season 2 of “Ahsoka,” where he will portray Baylan Skoll, a role previously held by the late Ray Stevenson.
As a cinephile who’s always on the lookout for chilling thrillers, I had the opportunity to catch the gripping horror film Tornado in select theaters on May 30. However, for those who missed it, fear not! This heart-pounding movie will soon be available on Shudder, a platform tailored for genre enthusiasts like myself.
