Bring Her Back” – The New Horror Film by Danny and Michael Philippou
Similar to their first film, “Talk to Me” (2022), “Bring Her Back” delves into the chilling horror that emerges when individuals with troubled pasts are enticed into making deals akin to Faust, as they strive to escape their sorrow. In this story, we meet Laura (played by Sally Hawkins), a caregiver with a motherly demeanor who harbors dark and twisted motives for ‘reclaiming’ her lost daughter, even at an unholy cost.
The narrative unfolds around a peculiar occult ritual that serves as the foundation of the movie’s supernatural elements – elements that, it must be said, leave much room for interpretation and audience imagination.
For readers who found themselves pondering over unresolved questions after finishing ‘Bring Her Back’, rest assured, you’re not the only one. Here, you might find some clarification about the mysterious occult rituals that form a core part of ‘Bring Her Back’, and their true nature – whether they held any real power or not.
What’s The Ritual & How Does It Work?
The specific tradition that captivates Laura’s interest appears to have originated in Russia, heavily influenced by religious mysticism. The incantations used during this practice are not directly translatable, yet it’s evident that the ritual follows a three-part sequence that carries a dark connotation.
- A “host” body is chosen to be the vessel of some otherworldly spirit. In the film, this role is taken on by “Oliver” (real name Connor Bird), the boy Laura kidnaps and possesses, using the first stage of the ritual.
- The “host” consumes the body of a dead person who is to be resurrected, thereby containing the lost soul inside it.
- A third person is chosen to be the sacrifice and is killed in the same exact way as the lost soul. The host then vomits the consumed body into the mouth of the sacrificed person, filling their body with the soul that was originally lost, bringing the dead person back in a new body.
Was The Ritual Real?
In the movie “Bring Her Back,” Laura, who was trying to complete a ritual on Piper (Sora Wong), didn’t get the chance to finish as Piper addressed her affectionately as ‘mom.’ This emotional appeal triggered Laura’s maternal feelings, causing her to halt the process of drowning Piper in the pool. Nevertheless, the initial scenes and instances where Laura refers to the videotapes of the ritual for guidance hint at its authenticity and significance.
Without a doubt, the main message in the novel “Bring Her Back” is less about the ritual itself and more about its symbolism: it serves as a distorted method for an individual to evade their sorrow, embodying all the illogical actions one might take to ease that agony. However, it’s challenging to overlook the unsettling events occurring during Andy and Piper’s visit with Larua, especially when considering Oliver’s peculiar behavior…
Was Oliver an Angel? Or A Demon?
The main controversy surrounding “Bring Her Back” revolves around the nature of Oliver’s possession. Unlike traditional depictions of evil, the film does not present Oliver as an overtly malicious or particularly intelligent entity. Instead, he appears passive and seems to be manipulated by specific incantations in Laura’s ritual. The most contentious aspect of Oliver is his growing, unquenchable hunger, which arises from his desire to consume Cathy’s corpse. However, Laura cannot perform this act until she encounters Piper and decides that she is the right candidate for Cathy’s resurrection through her body.
It appears that Oliver might have been a supernatural being, rather than an angel, according to the directors’ interpretation. He seems to be morally neutral and used as a tool by higher powers.
According to Michael, Oliver isn’t necessarily good or evil. Instead, he’s performing some extraordinary feat – returning a cherished person who had been lost.
He doesn’t have malicious motives; instead, he’s more like a genie in a bottle. When you summon him, that’s when he’ll appear.
Bring Her Back is now in theaters.
