Latest Gundam Film Heading Back To the Theaters (But With a Catch)

Bandai Namco, Sunrise Studios (also known as Bandai Namco Filmworks), and Studio Khara are re-releasing the movie prequel to Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, titled Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, in theaters. This film originally premiered in Japanese cinemas on January 17th, acting as a precursor to the main Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX TV series which started airing in April. The movie, Beginning, was essentially a compilation of the first three episodes of the show. However, when the series was eventually broadcast, the sequence of events changed, with the introductory flashback from the movie serving as the second episode of the TV series. A portion of this flashback scene from the film was also included at the start of the eighth episode, titled “Falling on the Moon.

The film titled Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- was incredibly successful in Japan, debuting at number one at the domestic box office. In North American cinemas, it had a restricted showing and grossed over a million dollars at the US box office. Beginning will return to Japanese theaters on June 20th, 2025, accompanied by a new collector’s booklet for fans. This booklet is named Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- Design Works 3 and includes fresh content such as early sketches of Machu and Nyaan, a maid outfit design for Match, Shiiko Sugai’s original draft for the setting, and preliminary mechanical designs for the Psycho Gundam.

The decision has been made for the re-release of the movie ‘Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-‘ starting from June 20th (Thursday)! Additionally, as a gift for ticket holders, you will receive ‘DESIGN WORKS 3’. This is based on the creators of the TV series ‘Mobile Suit Gundam…’.

Gundam at the Movies

On June 28th, a special screening of the film is scheduled at Toho Cinemas Shinjuku in Tokyo to mark its re-release in Japanese cinemas. Notable attendees will include Tomoyo Kurosawa (voice actress for Machu), director Kazuya Tsurumaki, and scriptwriter Yoji Enokido. In 2025 at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, California, there will be a special event dedicated to Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. While the specifics are yet to be confirmed, it’s expected that the screening will feature the beginning of the film. Additionally, Kurosawa, Tsurumaki, and Enokido are slated to attend this event as well.

Previously, Sunrise distributed pamphlets and new artwork cards to cinema attendees for watching Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-. With The Design Works 3 on the horizon, Gundam enthusiasts have another reason to revisit theaters, boosting the potential earnings of Beginning. However, even with the impressive box office figures of Beginning, it falls short compared to Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom. According to Box Office Mojo, Beginning garnered over 23 million USD worldwide, but failed to outperform the 36 million USD box office of Seed Freedom. In Japan, Seed Freedom was a massive success, continuing the narrative of one of the most beloved Gundam anime series in the country.

The anime series titled “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” has teamed up with various companies to offer unique merchandise. Some of the upcoming collaborations for “Gundam GQuuuuuuX” involve a Raku Spa partnership, showcasing a new promotional image featuring characters in kimono spa robes, and the Tokyu Kabukicho Tower. The series is anticipated to span 12 episodes, with the finale possibly airing during the last week of June, though there’s a chance it might be delayed. Unlike traditional mainline Gundam shows that run for 50 episodes, it remains uncertain whether “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” will receive another season. The most recent mainline Gundam anime, “The Witch from Mercury“, consisted of only 25 episodes.
