The Monster High group is set to appear on the big screen, and it’s been announced today that an intriguing and fitting selection has been made for the upcoming film by Mattel. In an official communique, Mattel disclosed that they have selected Gerard Johnstone, director of M3GAN, to direct the live-action Monster High movie. This project will be produced by Universal Pictures and Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road label. Notably, Johnstone is also overseeing the eagerly awaited sequel of M3GAN 2.0, and he plans to bring that same enchantment to Mattel’s cherished franchise about a monster-themed high school, filled with the chaotic antics of characters like Frankie Stein, Draculaura, Abbey Abominable, and others.
Robbie Brenner, head of Mattel Studios, stated: “Gerard’s distinctive perspective and ability to blend genres perfectly suits this project. This aligns with our goal at Mattel Studios as we collaborate with leading creators to develop innovative, surprising tales from our vast collection of brands. Monster High is a beloved series with limitless narrative possibilities, and we are ecstatic about the prospect of reinventing it in an exhilarating manner with Gerard in command.
Mattel shows great confidence in Johnstone, and he’s thrilled about diving into a sandbox brimming with legendary and mythical monsters. In other words, Mattel Studios has proven they aren’t shy about taking big risks with their intellectual property, and what excites Johnstone most about Monster High is the chance to build in a sandbox filled with countless iconic monster stories. Working alongside Akiva, Robbie, and Universal Pictures on this project is like a dream come true for him. He can hardly wait for viewers to explore the peculiar, enchanting universe of misfit magic we’re about to construct.
Monster High holds a deeply personal significance for Goldsman, as he aims to create a movie and interpretation of the franchise that both longtime fans and his own daughters can appreciate. As he stated, “Monster High is close to my heart because my daughters adored the dolls and their values. Gerard’s work is bold, innovative, and brimming with emotion. He’s the ideal director for this project.
As of now, specifics about the plot and characters are still under wraps, but it has been confirmed that the upcoming project will introduce an entirely new story. Monster High, initially launched in 2010, has been capturing hearts ever since, expanding into a massive phenomenon encompassing toys, dolls, animation, and video games. The latest animated rendition, which was broadcast on Nickelodeon, concluded its run towards the end of 2024, while the previous live-action movie aired in 2022.
In this new installment, the franchise is set to shine brighter than ever before, leaving us eagerly anticipating the return of our beloved monster crew on the silver screen. For those who may be unaware, Monster High follows a unique school environment where monsters are the students, and each character is a creative spin-off of popular mythical creatures. Over the years, the cast has grown considerably, but the core group consists of Frankie Stein, Draculaura, Abbey Abominable, Cleo DeNile, Clawdeen Wolf, and Lagoona Blue.
We’re only touching on the main topics here, but there’s a strong possibility that we’ll see brief appearances from beloved characters such as Twyla Boogeyman, Deuce Gorgon, Ghoulia Yelps, Jinafire Long, Catty Noir, Spectra Vondergeist, and of course, Headmistress Bloodgood.
