Supporters of the mysterious Netflix series “The OA” were recently given a surprising glimmer of hope, six years following its sudden termination. In a recent chat on Jo Whiley’s BBC radio program, actor Jason Isaacs – who played the antagonist Dr. Hunter Aloysius “Hap” Percy – indicated that the creative team behind the show is still working towards continuing the series’ distinctive storyline. This statement from Isaacs brings renewed optimism to a fan base that has fervently advocated for the show’s revival since Netflix halted production in August 2019, after only two seasons. Although Isaacs didn’t provide any firm guarantees, his words hint at a collective resolve among the key personnel of “The OA” to bring its complex plot to a fitting end.
During that podcast interview, I firmly expressed my belief that the story can’t end there. Last week, Zal and Britain (from The OA team) and I shared a meal in Los Angeles, and trust me when I say we’re not ready to let it go just yet. I can’t reveal more details, not because I’m keeping secrets, but because the passion we all share for this show won’t allow us to forget about it. The OA was unexpectedly put on hold, but the dedication of its creators and cast remains as strong as ever.
In December 2016, “The OA” debuted on Netflix, showcasing Prairie Johnson (played by Brit Marling), a formerly blind woman who inexplicably reappears with her sight restored after being absent for seven years. Evading questions from the FBI and her loved ones, Prairie, now known as “The OA,” assembles a motley crew of local outcasts and gradually reveals her astounding tale. She recounts her time in captivity under Dr. “Hap” Percy, a brilliant but compulsive scientist who held her and other survivors of near-death experiences to investigate their experiences and uncover the secrets of dimensional travel across realms. The series skillfully combined aspects of science fiction, supernatural enigma, and emotionally gripping human drama, delving into themes such as pain, belief, interdependence, and the potency of narrative itself.
The Unfinished Symphony of The OA
In August 2019, Netflix decided to cancel “The OA” shortly after its well-received second season, leaving fans stunned. This was particularly disappointing because the creators had intended a five-season storyline, and the second season ended with a complex cliffhanger that left many plotlines unresolved and characters in perilous interdimensional predicaments. Netflix, which typically bases its content decisions on data, seldom reverses cancellations, often using cost-versus-completion-rate as a factor. Given “The OA’s” grand scope and high production costs, it was probably an expensive series to produce. Although the show had critical praise and a dedicated fanbase, it didn’t seem to align with Netflix’s specific standards for renewal, effectively ending the series.
Supporters’ reaction to the cancellation of The OA was swift, coordinated, and astonishingly resilient. The hashtag #SaveTheOA went viral worldwide, and various online petitions garnered hundreds of thousands of signatures. Fans orchestrated flash mobs performing the show’s signature “movements” in public areas, such as outside Netflix’s headquarters. They pooled funds for a billboard in Times Square urging Netflix to reconsider and even resorted to more unconventional forms of protest, mirroring the series’ own themes of collective action and conviction. This outpouring of affection underscored the profound bond viewers had established with The OA‘s characters and its philosophical inquiries. Regrettably, no official news has surfaced yet about The OA being revived for a third season. However, it’s comforting to know that the show’s cast and crew are making efforts behind the scenes to bring it back.
The OA Parts I and II are currently available on Netflix.
