Fans of horror who subscribe to Shudder can look forward to a thrilling surprise this month. Guillermo del Toro’s lesser-known yet gripping vampire series, The Strain, is finally arriving on the streaming platform. This addition expands Shudder’s already impressive collection of modern horror television, providing a fantastic chance for new viewers to uncover its distinctive terror or for devoted fans to revisit the spine-tingling narrative. Co-created by del Toro and Chuck Hogan, this series was based on their trilogy of novels with the same title. In contrast to many contemporary representations, The Strain offered a darker, less romantic perspective on vampirism.
Initially airing on FX back in 2014, “The Strain” spanned four seasons before wrapping up its storyline in 2017, comprising a total of 46 episodes. The narrative commences with a spine-chilling enigma: a Boeing 767 lands at New York City’s JFK Airport and unexpectedly shuts down on the runway, all window blinds drawn and communication lines silent. Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), chief of the CDC’s Canary Team, is summoned to probe what appears as a viral outbreak. Alongside his team including biochemist Dr. Nora Martinez (Mía Maestro), they uncover that all but four passengers have perished from an inexplicable infection. However, the reality turns out to be even more horrifying, as an ancient parasitic creature starts transforming its victims into ‘strigoi’, gruesome, bloodthirsty vampires under the command of a malevolent force known as the Master.
The Strain series details the rapid progression of a gruesome vampire epidemic throughout New York City and beyond, focusing on an assortment of survivors such as exterminator Vasiliy Fet (Kevin Durand) and Holocaust survivor Professor Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley). Together, they engage in a desperate battle against the encroaching shadows. The depiction of vampires by Del Toro and Hogan is decidedly grotesque, incorporating elongated stingers, parasitic worms that carry the contagion, and a psychic link to their forebears – a stark contrast to the somber figures commonly associated with vampire mythology.
The Strain Deserves a New Audience on Shudder
Throughout its duration, The Strain was widely appreciated, with its standout points being the impressive practical effects, chilling creature design, and unwavering dedication to portraying a bleak apocalypse. Guillermo del Toro’s distinctive visual flair is evident in the series, particularly in the creation of the strigoi and their fearsome leader, the Master. The vampires are truly terrifying, progressing through unsettling stages, and the show doesn’t hold back on graphic depictions of body horror and gore, aspects that will undoubtedly captivate Shudder’s dedicated horror enthusiasts. Although some critics pointed out occasional issues with pace or character development across its four seasons, the overall storyline remained engaging, combining elements of epidemic thriller, siege warfare, and dark fantasy in a unique way.
Additionally, “The Strain” is a unique addition to Guillermo del Toro’s extensive body of work in television. It highlights his interest in richly layered mythology, characters with moral dilemmas navigating unspeakable terrors, and undeniably chilling creatures. Therefore, “The Strain” could be an ideal prelude as we anticipate the arrival of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein on Netflix.
The Strain will begin streaming on Shudder on June 22nd.
